Do VW frames have a vin or id number stamped on them? If so where?

Reason I ask is CO DMV is very hard to work with, especially with special constructed vehicles. If I knew or had a frame number or where to find it it would be so much easier to get this out of state titled Speedster titled here in CO.

Loathe dealing with CO DMV.

I have to have a certified VIN check here. Any car coming from out of state must go through this before it can be licensed here.

If I can find the chassis ID number and it checks out it can then be licensed easily, possibly as the year of the frame, the SPCNS means nothing to them other than identifying the body make and type.

Both my '65 Cobra and the '33 Vicky were originally built and licensed in AZ where we were living at the time, the Cobra as a '65 Ford Shelby roadster and the Vicky as a '33 Ford sedan, when we moved back to WA I had no problem registering them there or when we moved here. Neither car had an original frame or vin tag, the Cobra only had the NAF ID #, it was very easy in AZ, had to go through a pretty thorough safety check with both cars, then took the paperwork down to DMV to get titles and historic plates. Funny thing about the Cobra when I went into license it after the CO vin check, the clerk couldn't find ''65 Ford Shelby Roadster'' in her database...

Colorado DMV has always made it difficult to license vehicles such as street rods, way to many hoops to jump through, fees to pay, etc..

I'm going to go to the Loveland DMV. Done dealing with Greeley's DMV. Supposedly at Loveland, from friends who've gone thru this, they are much more easy to deal with and understand special constructed vehicles...still have to do the State Patrol VIN check though. I know one of the officers and he is a 'car guy'(he has a '63 split window 'vette, owned it for years) ...just hope I can get him to do the inspection...yet it all comes down to who is on duty when I make the appointment...you can not specify which officer inspects the vehicle...

Will have to pull the passenger seat since the tunnel carpeting covers the tunnel  goes under the floor carpet as far as I can tell...just got the car from the shipper about 2hrs ago...still drooling over it. NICE!

Found the Number on the tunnel, right where Ted said it should be. cut a small flap in the carpeting and cut and removed a section of the DynoMat(did not know the pan, etc. had it) over the number, cleaned  the area off and touched up the numbers with some white paint then wiped the paint of highlighting the numbers. Should help the inspection process immensely.

One of the things I'm concerned about is if the state licenses it for the year it was made, '92, it will have to go thru emission testing because of the year of manufacture according to state law...That'll be real battle with DMV if it comes down to it, since it was something like in '77 or so the last Bug was imported to the US from Germany. And it has been illegal to import the Mexican made ones since '79 because they do not meet emission standards in the US...wonder what DMV will do? Hope the Loveland DMV is more up to speed than Greeley's.

The title only has SPCNS on it, no year of manufacture. The CA issued Tag on the body has '68 Volks, engine and drivetrain. Then it has the a vin # for the body only and that number is also on the CA title. Nothing else, that is what has CO DMV all messed up. The car was built in SoCal in '92 for the original owner and I have the original owners paperwork, it was titled and license as a SPCNS back then. The current owner had just transferred the title to his name when he bought the car.

That's why a lot of folks try to register it as the year of the donor title as a VW (or even VW based replica/ket car/etc).  I know CA doesn't like that because property/transfer taxes on a say '71 VW are not going to be near the $27,000+ VS sales price.  Many unscrupulous new owners try to get away with the VW basis ignoring the $10k in engine, $2k in new wheels/tires, $16k for painted fiberglass shell.  CA's SPCNS seems to be their work around the State getting short end But I thought it exempted emissions inspections to year of engine.  Since CA title also has the VW year I'd push CO and say that merely when a replica fiberglass body was placed on the old VW platform. It wasn't like they put a '92 computerized fuel injected cleaner burning engine in at that time.  So push for the year of chassis - stating you are willing to pay sales tax on the modified body (IAW the Bill of Sale sales price).  Let them decide whether to call it a 1968 VW 2 door sedan, or '68 VW "with replica Porsche '57 Speedster body" or 68 VW based "replica 57 Speedster".  Like you said - no way will a modified VW air cooled engine with dual carbs pass a tail pipe emissions test and good luck plugging their computer into the non-existant ODB diagnostic plug.

GR;

Boy someone really messed up at CA DMV.  The SC1098, is not even a body number nor production number.   Those numbers by CMC, are at best order numbers.  Of course none of that is verifiable now, since the demise of CMC.  If you notice on my SPCNS tag, the VIN is a VW verifiable VIN. And it does match my chassis number, located on the tunnel as described earlier. My CMC number appears no wheres on my SPCNS tag.  Part of the SB100 application process is to use the chassis number/VIN to ensure that it isn't stolen.

I have no suggestions. This is beyond my pay grade.  Only to say perhaps getting a copy of the VW Chassis VIN number lists, that show year of production, and take that with you as "evidence" of your cars production year. Here's one source:

You might take your engine number in to DMV, to verify it's VW life.

Sorry,  Good luck

Cole, it would be nice to link up with you. Didn't know there were very many other owners of these Speedsters up here. Will be taking my car down to State Patrol to do the vin check next week. Got an appointment for it on Tuesday...hopefully everything will go OK.

I had no problem at insuring as I use Grundy...have used them for maybe 12-15 years now on all my cars...Called them, told them what I had acquired and sent them a few pictures of the car, 2 days later got an email informing me that the car was insured at at 'agreed on value'...

Have to see what Patrol and DMV says before getting plates...would great to meet with another Speedster owner in the area.

I might add on my new to me JPS the vin number was pretty far back on the transmission tunnel and conveniently there was a flap of carpet which was clearly made to access the vin number.   BUT here is the thing which almost stumped me.  The shallowness of the engraving.  Boy I had to really look for it.  I was able to do a pencil tracing of it and got the car registered as a 74 VW. I expected something much more obvious.   Perhaps other cars are different.  Only way I would have ever found it was the carpet patch which seemed go to nothing giving me a clue as to "what could this be for"

Yes she is registered and titled in Pa now.  Pa requires a tracing of the vin number for any car brought into the state. OR a the clerk has to eye ball the vin on the vehicle. One other option is to have a licensed mechanic fill out a form certifying that the title number (on the out of state title) is in fact the number on the car.  For me the easiest was to pencil trace the vin.  I didn't want to open a can of worms with the car as it clearly isn't a VW car.  It also is clearly worth more then the stated value for the 74 VW.   I am sure every state is different

John, CA DMV, won't issue a SPCNS registration, to just a modified VW body, say flared wheel wells, on a VW chassis.

Again, to make the vehicle searchable, by CHP, on the streets.  If my car's registration said "1973 VW Beetle" (the actual donor in my case), there would be head scratching, upon being pulled over by the CHP, looking at my speedster formally known as a 1973 VW Beetle.

Clear as mud .

In Pa I don't know how else you would do it.  They have to have a vin number and what other number is there?    Honestly in Pa I don't think they care.  It's not tax annually and the yearly registration fee would be the same regardless.   Certainly no authority on this.  Just wanted folks to know the vin number is not easy to see even once you are pointed to the spot.

For me, it wasn't a matter of scruples. I just transferred ownership into my name. Registration was just a formality. Older bugs are worth as much , sometimes more , than a CMC.

Could I have offered up that it was a kit? Sure. But California's laws and policies a so out of control that I decided to choose the path of least B.S.  They get their pound of flesh from me in property taxes and income taxes.  Don't get me started on the gun laws...
