Sounds like the place that Gary Brindel (brindleg) is having replace the engine in his 911. Gary? It's a mile from my house but not familiar with their work. I used to get parts from the Buggy Man in Lorton - they used to do repairs but not sure their status any more (apparently member of the family died years ago affecting their repair business). (Contact info - Buggy Man VW Parts, 8906 Hooes Rd, Lorton, VA. Phone: 703-690-1408.) If its engine work - Dale Schumacher has a reputable guy down in Stafford that I'm going to have clean up some VW heads for me --- he's built 2 engines for Dale.

Stop in if you get down this way.
Bruce,
I have never used Monks - but if it's engine work he buys a turnkey rebuilt or long block from Wayne Dittman down here in Stafford and resells to his guys or uses pieced together stuff - not always best rep.... Wayne has been around and building engines for 30 years plus. Any old time Bug guys along the east coast should know his name. Good guy and prices are good and cares about his product. He works out of his home shop part time now days.
He let me build my own 1641 in his shop - watching me - and I bought all the parts from him. I am now building a 2110 for my speedster w/ his watchful eye over me. So I would say he is the guy to go to for engine work local. The Buggy Man ( see Wolfgang post ) has good prices on new old stock as he does not raise his prices until he buys new stock - so if it's been sitting on the shelve the price will be much lower then even all the mail order places and he will wheel and deal if you buy a few things at one time.
Wayne's number- 540 752 5303 Call after 5:00 and before 8:00 PM
Keep trying till he picks up - don't know if he ever checks his messages - tell him I sent you.
If he can't reach him let me know and I will reach him somehow.
Good luck,
Dale
Wolfgang, Dale,

Thanks for the info. My engine has an issue right now and may need a rebuild so I'm looking for someone close to home. I'll keep Wayne in mind.

JP,

Will do. A few years ago I used a place named Joe Langlois Best Foreign Cars that did some nice work for me. At the time, he had built a Speedster of his own and was in the process of selling it so he related to the work. Comments I've seen on the 'net seem to be positive. He is located at 223 Ritchie Hwy in Severna Park which is down in your direction. I believe this is his site: www.evwparts.com. BTW, check out the Events category on this site re: Carlisle, this is a terrific weekend to bring your Speedster (once you buy one) or maybe even to find one. Keep us updated on your progress.
Bruce, yes that is Joe. That's where I get my intake gaskets from, among other things. Great guy, I recommend him to anyone. Not to knock the others, but I would rather have a fellow enthusiast make some money on the same parts I'd get elsewhere. Plus he's on the right coast, no offense!

Thanks Bruce for the information. As for now, I plan on coming to the outing in PA.
Yes, I am still looking to buy. Since my exposure to this site, I been informed beyond belief. I guess my preference is a preowned 356 replica super wide or wide body. I had the opportunity to speak to Kirk at Vintage, who could build me one for approximately 25,000. That's not bad, but I, like most people are trying to cut cost. Therefore, preowned is the remaining option.

Again thanks for the info.

JP
James -

FWIW, if you can come to an agreement with Billy B. on his S/wide body Speedster, you would definitely have bought into a top-of-the-line Vintage with all the bells & whistles - plus, that monster HAULS ASS!!! Billy has been on a few SOC cruises here in SoCal, and I can tell you from personal observation, that is a nice car with attitude. To have a similar car built would be >$35K.

Also, an another to consider would be Gerd K.'s beautiful blue JPS wide body (also on this site). Nice details with a lot of pep!

IMHO, if you could swing either deal, I think you would be ahead of the game.

Peace - Out!

Hey Alan,

I contacted the salesman and now awaiting followup. The price is right but while not exactly what I looking for (to much red), I'll see what happens. Does the car have duel exhaust and carbs? What size engine does it have? It is not pictured with the top and the windows appear to be different from others I seen.

Again, thanks to you and Troy.

James
Another shop you may want to keep in mind is "Bubba's East Coast Custom and Hotrod in Fairfax. They do absolutely outstanding work, they are prompt and great guys to boot. However, they are a lot more expensive then most other shops. I use them for detail work on my speedster. Don't have the number handy but you can google them.

Good Luck!
James, I have a wide bodied speedster (CMC) built in 1977 on a 1972 IRS VW type 1 solid chassis, black with grey leather seats, 1776 thype 1 motor which will be for sale in 4-6 weeks. I actually bought this car from "Dr Clock", and now find no room in the in for this great car...6 others and only 4 bays..... If you're interested, email me at thanna5@comcast.net. Car is garaged in Stuart FL.
