How difficult is it, and how much time would it take to swap out a Type I engine?

Is it easier to switch out the engine and retain the transmission, or better to just keep it all together?

What special tools would be required?

What sorts of part incompatabilities should I expect?

Any leads to good web resources would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

Chris, is this in a VW, Beck, Vintage replica 356??? When Beck installs engines, 2 guys lift the engine from each side and button it up to the pre-mounted transmission. No unusual tools are required, you'll probably need a 10, 13 & 17mm and an adjustable wrench.

It's not a huge task, just time consuming.
The average novice time to remove the VW engine, remove the engine in the Spyder and install the new engine into the Spyder should be 4 to 5 hours.

Electrical will hook up exactly the same as it did in the Bug provided the Bug has an alternator and not a generator.

You may have to slightly modify the linkage depending on the carb setup on the "new" engine as well as the fuel supply. If the "new" engine has an oil filter, you'll have to adapt and mount the filter in the spyder but we're talking about simple stuff.
