Yes, there have been a few Spyders built that way. Wankels rev forever and have high horsepower and low torque, kind of like the Honda S2000. Unless you rev the snot out of it, it feels slow. But, add a nice turbo or two(sequential), and you do get torque. Ask Angela Lane, she put one in a car and had trouble keeping it cool I think. Exhaust runs really hot IIRC.

Looking at Kennedy's website, they offer a Wankle (1974+) rotary kit to bolt to a Mustang T-5 tranny, but you retain the Mazda pressure plate and flywheel (good) and use a ford clutch disk.

Obviously, they know the bolt patterns of both the Mazda Rotary and either a ZF or Volkswagen transaxle so God knows, it may certainly be possible.

Someone came to Carlisle a few years back with one of those CMC kits that looked like a Ford GT40.   We could hear it coming across the show field and everyone turned and looked.  Merklin and I wandered over after he arrived (it was a pretty fast wander, as I remember) and found that the gorgeous exhaust note came from a Mazda RX-7 rotary engine.  If he did it, then someone else can, too.

Sweet.

Thanks for that fun. Is it just me or does that Mazda driver need to learn to drive faster?

I had a 1983 RX7 with a 12A rotary, low compression rotors,a Cartec intercooled turbo, alum flywheel, downdraft Weber and a killer freeflow exhaust. It dynoed over 300 hp and would rev to 12000 rpms in seconds. I killed every Grand National in town!

Then I recently bought a 1988 RX7 Turbo 2 and transplanted a Corvette LS6  in it with a 6 speed. Its my STRESS RELIEF!!!!!!!
