Steve, I wanted to see how long it would take for somebody to notice! Ahahah ! It's el'gone o'. Im assuming that 1/8" think tab the rod goes through is the bushing mount. There's no bushing in front of the shifter cup. Is that right? Why do I remember there being 2 bushings on my ole' HS girlfriends bug? Anyway, I have a new bushing. Somebody really, really, needs to make a 2 piece bushing to save the time of pulling out that rod, etc. I see my CMC carpet has a flap for access to the rear shift coupler.
In the past we dealt w/ a new bushing that was split lengthwise. We'd taper it at the end that goes to the rear of the car using a grinder until the edge was very thin. Then we'd lube the taper and the bushing liberally w/ Lubriplate (white grease) also lube the shift rod liberally and then install it by pushing it into the mounting plate from the front starting at one corner and then rotating it in until the last section was at the 4 or 8 o'clock position. Then we'd use a LARGE screwdriver to push the last section all the way in making sure the split was at the top. Usually done in 30min. from start to finish.

Keith, the clip holds the bushing in its natural cylindrical shape, not allowing the piece to deform by sliding in two directions along the slit in it.
You place the zip-tie around only the bushing, which is itself in place around the rod. Clear as mud, right?

And, BTW, Steve up there is Angela. She's been using Steve's login for about the entire time she's been here, like maybe the last 10 years or so. I'm guessing he doesn't mind. ... ;)
