Been trying to help fellow SO in UK get his CMC registered and on the road there. He bought from US (Lance Motors in NJ) a CMC that was on the road in Michigan years ago. It has a Michigan assigned VIN but remarkably it was shipped to him without a title (just a Bill of Sale). Michigan claims they don't keep title info past 10 years (ah, the wonder of computers and cheap storage must not be in Michigan yet! This amazes me.) I've tried both Michigan and Lance Motors to no avail. (Even sending Michigan $ they say no records!) Appears only way left is to cut off already mangled chassis hunk with "VIN" id and weld new piece on with matching title (would like the aluminium VW matching plate from trunk or windshield too). I have trip to UK in May and will be in town near Chris so will hand deliver (ok he promised me a pint or 2 at the White Horse). Need by early May to make the trip. Currently he can't get plates/inspection/insurance the way it is - so it's a gorgeous flower planter.

Anyone have old bent/rusted chassis they could cut piece from and a title to go with it? Or any ideas on tracking down PO or original Michigan title (or connection to CSI?) Maybe someone know the PO?

Attached are pictures of his current mangled VIN id area and link to his threads 9 months ago.

Hmmm....I'll be interested in this as well....My CMC came from Florida as an unfinished project though mine came with a Florida title that matches the '67 pan..

I've not registered it yet as it must have a UK inspection cert, (MOT), first....Won't have that till I get it roadworthy !

After inspection and registration, they then decide if you have to go on for an even more stringent, $800 test,(BIVA).....
Mike - "We" were trying to find out who was the Previous Owner (PO) on the Mich title. Once we had that we had hoped to track PO down and contact him to see if he still had Title filed away or could he get a duplicate issued. I can see how they wouldn't issue duplicate to someone off the street - but was amazed they had no records at all (even after paying their research fee). I couldn't find away to get a title issued to an "abandoned vehicle" from them.

Do you think the form you filled out and copy of the Bill of Sale would get us a reissued title? (Car is in UK so not like we could show them the car). If I send you copy (and cover cost) - would it be convient for you to go by and ask them? Letters and phone calls seem to get you nowhere!

Someone recently said that there was more documentation available from the Civil War than for the Iraq War! Sad when terrabytes of historical data are transmitted and lost! Same can be said 100 years from now for all the "lost" digital photos that were never printed or save!
I didn't need to tell them anything about the previous owner.

If I remember right, I just filled out the form with the vin number. Then they did a search to confirm that no one else owner it. Of course they didn't find anything.

Next time I head in that direction on one of my almost daily trips to the hardware store I'll talk to someone at the Secretary of State office.

It is hard to tell in the photo. Does it still have a VW number on the tunnel? I think that should be used rather than the number on the door sticker.

It would be useful to know if other Speedster owners in the UK use the VW number.

I don't know why they did the "assembled vehicle" routine on a pan based car. That is more complicated than just keeping it titled as a VW.
I just went through this in Oklahoma. I don't know if it is any different in other states.

I bought a baja bug that had sat in the back of a farm for 15 years, and hadn't been titled in a long time, and the title was lost. I am using it as the pan for my speedster project. I didn't want to finish my car and not be able to register it (in 20 year when I finally finish it) , so I went ahead and went through the process on the baja bug.

I just filed a title 42 lean on the car, when they did the check to see if anyone had claimed the car missing or stolen, it came up negative, thus I have been awarded a title on the car.

It's probably a lot more complicated than that, but I just paid a company out of Oklahoma city to do it for me. http://www.needatitleokc.com

I think they only deal with cars in oklahoma, but I would imagine a company like this must exist just about everywhere.

I would call the local junk yard, and see what they recommend. When cars get abandoned, they must have some process to go through to title their cars, if they plan on selling them. That's a problem in just about every country in the world. I'm sure there is a loophole in the UK to get a title for that car.

Peace
Mark
