Done deal. In stock and on its way

I was hoping to keep all my gauges the same but oh well...

VDO has been asked more than once over the years to make a temp compensated cht gauge but have never responded why they won't. I think it's got something (cross that out and make it everything) to do with the fact that most VW owners are cheap assed and wouldn't pay what it would cost.

Looks like he ordered the 14mm sender ring.  It will work great, unless your plug has a 12mm diameter.  Then it's a bit of a pain to install.

This time around I have my CHT sending unit attached directly to the head via a drilled and tapped bolt/nut.

Bill, let us know how easy it is to read the gauge in sunlight/top down driving.

The stock fuel injection head temp boss was only intended to tell the computer when the engine was warmed up, so it could lean out the a/f ratio. While putting a temperature sensor there will give approximate values, only under the spark plug is close enough to the combustion chamber to give real time info.

I'm of the understanding (from talking to people I know in the hobby and reading on other VW forums) that anywhere else on the head doesn't tell you what's going on in the combustion chamber, which is what you're trying to monitor. I'm guessing that mounting a sender on an exhaust stud would be an excellent indicator of exhaust temps, but is it close enough to the combustion chamber? I don't know...

I've been told that using the fuel injection temp boss gives 30-50'F lower readings and is far enough away (from the combustion chamber) that it can't tell you any real time info (looking above, I see I'm repeating myself) on temp spikes, but can only note trends. With the sender under the spark plug you can see a 20 or 30 second temp rise when going up a hill and lugging slightly, and then the temp start to come down as soon as the extra load is no longer there. This event (which would last all of a minute or minute and a half) would not be seen by the gauge with the sender in the stock temp boss. I'm told that for the info to be of any value the readings have to come from under the plug- it's the closest place to the combustion chamber you can get. Anywhere else and there's just too much material acting as a heat sink and altering readings.

Under almost constant discussion on the Samba- Mofoco, the only VW head manufacturer in the U.S. (cast in a foundry in Wisconsin, I think), claims that their slightly different fin design runs significantly cooler than even a VW head. Unfortunately, the proprieter uses a cast in temp boss to mount the temp probe/sender, and refuses to satisfy the nay-sayers and mount one under the plug for direct comparison.

Everyone in the industry (except for Roy) that uses and values head temp readings mounts it under the spark plug.

... almost like he's got something to hide, you think?

I'll have to see what my head temps are with the sending unit not located over the spark plug hole.

With my twin Setrab oil coolers mounted up front I'm pretty confident my oil temps will be okay, but my low rpm a cruising speed may have an impact on my head temps and I want an accurate reading.
