Anyone have a good source as I don't have time to look at vendors in the world wide web...

There are only two CHT gauges (that I know of) that are worth their salt:

or

Do it right the first time.
VDO discontinued this gauge FYI. They still make a 400 degree version for marine applications but it is Europe only at the moment. We are working with N Hollywood and Palo Alto to come up with a solution to have a 356-like CHT again...
German Supply still lists a 600 degree sender for $32 CAD.

I need the gauge to. Out of stock!
Chirco has sender too - half way there!

and gauge for $90

That's "Mahalo for your kokua"
Is that dos?
Why do company's advertise products they don't have or can't get?
I now have a sender on the way with no gauge!
Darn I put it in my cart and it worked - but I didn't check out. I was tempted to order to have just in case. Maybe I can find another. I did find 914 temp gauge but think its for the oil temp - plus no # on it.
I ordered, paid and today I get the sorry email...

Some companies will do that.
Other companies will not.
Good companies try to keep their web sites up to date.
No luck so far -
Found this info about VDO re-introducing in Fall of 2015 ---

Done deal. In stock and on its way
I was hoping to keep all my gauges the same but oh well...

Which sender did you order to go with it?

VDO has been asked more than once over the years to make a temp compensated cht gauge but have never responded why they won't. I think it's got something (cross that out and make it everything) to do with the fact that most VW owners are cheap assed and wouldn't pay what it would cost.
Looks like he ordered the 14mm sender ring. It will work great, unless your plug has a 12mm diameter. Then it's a bit of a pain to install.
This time around I have my CHT sending unit attached directly to the head via a drilled and tapped bolt/nut.
Bill, let us know how easy it is to read the gauge in sunlight/top down driving.
I noticed that T1 FI heads and T4 (914) heads have a threaded boss and CHT sensor - assume for the electronic fuel injection. Guess that could be hooked up to a VDO CHT gauge (if you can find one).
The stock fuel injection head temp boss was only intended to tell the computer when the engine was warmed up, so it could lean out the a/f ratio. While putting a temperature sensor there will give approximate values, only under the spark plug is close enough to the combustion chamber to give real time info.
I've also got a fuel injection head temp boss, but my mechanic didn't mount both senders at the same point. Not sure why not?
Out of curiosity, could the sender be hooked to a header bolt and still give an accurate reading?
I'm of the understanding (from talking to people I know in the hobby and reading on other VW forums) that anywhere else on the head doesn't tell you what's going on in the combustion chamber, which is what you're trying to monitor. I'm guessing that mounting a sender on an exhaust stud would be an excellent indicator of exhaust temps, but is it close enough to the combustion chamber? I don't know...
I've been told that using the fuel injection temp boss gives 30-50'F lower readings and is far enough away (from the combustion chamber) that it can't tell you any real time info (looking above, I see I'm repeating myself) on temp spikes, but can only note trends. With the sender under the spark plug you can see a 20 or 30 second temp rise when going up a hill and lugging slightly, and then the temp start to come down as soon as the extra load is no longer there. This event (which would last all of a minute or minute and a half) would not be seen by the gauge with the sender in the stock temp boss. I'm told that for the info to be of any value the readings have to come from under the plug- it's the closest place to the combustion chamber you can get. Anywhere else and there's just too much material acting as a heat sink and altering readings.
Under almost constant discussion on the Samba- Mofoco, the only VW head manufacturer in the U.S. (cast in a foundry in Wisconsin, I think), claims that their slightly different fin design runs significantly cooler than even a VW head. Unfortunately, the proprieter uses a cast in temp boss to mount the temp probe/sender, and refuses to satisfy the nay-sayers and mount one under the plug for direct comparison.
Everyone in the industry (except for Roy) that uses and values head temp readings mounts it under the spark plug.

No.

... almost like he's got something to hide, you think?
Makes you wonder, Stan. I would love to use a set of his heads, but between the temp issue and the fact that he won't size the combustion chambers for big engines...
... to make no mention of "the step of which we shall not speak".
Yeah, I'd forgot all about that whole can of worms....
I'll have to see what my head temps are with the sending unit not located over the spark plug hole.
With my twin Setrab oil coolers mounted up front I'm pretty confident my oil temps will be okay, but my low rpm a cruising speed may have an impact on my head temps and I want an accurate reading.
If I had a SMART phone
That's cool.
