Hijack -- Wolfgang, an opportunity may present itself. I'll be sending my grille to a guy for exactly that surgical procedure. The CMC grille goes to TC, the VS grille goes into the Hoopty. If it works out, I'll send you a note and a photo. November or so will be the timeline; no idea how much or how little it will cost.
I had thought of cutting the legs off the VS rack and mounting with SS bolts to the CMC grill but suspect the rack is NOT SS so would rust in a hurry where I cut it. Another idea might be to aluminum weld the affected area between the slats closed and redrill so the legs would go through and then polish.

I posted recommended fix once before. I had called to order it from VS and talked to knowledgeable guy there. The hibachi CMC grill won't let the permanent tube legs of their rack to go thru. Their grill is about 1/4" larger around the outside edge (believe its one all the sides)and like the original has skinny/narrow slats and edging material so the rack legs slide thru. So since that gets rid of the lip on the engin lid where the CMC grill would have sat, you need to build up the inside to support the inner (rain shield) portion of the trunk and rebuild the lip. My thought was fill area all around with bondo then grind (sand) the opening larger then add some fiberglass cloth for reinforcing. It was just more work than I wanted to take on at the time.
