What brand exhaust can I replace it with to get a more agressive sounding motor? Thanks for your suggestions.

I'm trying to fit my V/S replica 356 with a new exhaust system and I wanted to get some suggestion from some happy owners. I have the original one that came from V/S on my 1915 motor and it sounds too much like a VW.

As I said in "Newbies", the A1 Sidewinder merged header with a Magnaflow muffler is a good way to go.

Why is this in for sale.....?
But, but, but... I LIKE my A-1turbomagnoViagraflo! ;-)
Good question Darren.
Jrod; Depending on what you want the exhaust to look like, or how much of it to show, just look through the back of the VW magazines and treat your wallet right.
That Monza-business Vintage uses is restrictive, cheesey (if it is like the little four pipe rig that came with mine) and tinny-sounding. BUT you don't have to spend wild dollars on an A-1turbomagnoViagraflo either!
I thought of this one:

As well you should, I'm just saying if it stays loud for more than four hours...
It's actually quiter than the el-cheapo that I started with, particularly at highway speeds. Above 3500rpm it gets surprisingly quite. Good thing, too, as the trek to Carlisle takes >6 hours on the first day.
Of course it's probably a good idea to use ear protection on a long trip anyway.

I priced out A-1 for my speedster as they are right next to me in Santa Ana. Went through the ordeal to get full prices and specs. All in all they were very helpful over the phone even though I could tell they were terribly busy.
The wallet is the biggest factor in this one. A-1 is the best system for a speedster bar none. Go for the carrera oval outlet and it looks amazing. However its eight to ten times the price of your standard VW exhaust.

my T4 A1 sidewinder setup is a beaut, but cost me a penny.
500 for the headers and stub pipes and another 225 for the muffler and pipe bends/flanges (which i welded together while fitting it.)

Add another 150.00 or so for ceramic coated Heater Boxes.

Here is my exhaust system with Boxster style center tip. It mounts up high, no exhaust tips to flaten out on steep drive ways.

Tuck-away system, sounds great with a decent exhaust note, $150.00.
If you want something louder, switch out the muffler for a Flow-Master 40 ~Alan

Alan,
Are valve adjustments a problem?
How do you support the muffler?
I have a similar system I haven't installed yet.

Muffler support: A piece of vertical flat stock that comes pre welded at the muffler, a slight bend and it is aligned to the speedster's the 2x2 box frame just above it.
Valve adjustments: just loosen the three bolts on the header to exhaust flange and remove the support bracket bolt, this allows for the entire unit to swing away from the valve cover. Both steps take under 3 minutes do do. ~Alan

All you guys are fantastic I found after looking closer that I do have the Tri Mil system. I'm looking into the A-1 system when time permits and i have $1,000 laying around. I was told there is a place in Orange county that carries these and also sets you up with a mechanic to tune it to the pipe afterwards. Anyone know of this place?
A1 is in Orange county. You just call Tiger, make an appointment, drive there and he does the rest! I don't have the number right now, maybe MUSBJIM does? I try and find the contact info. Try this number 714-836-7201.
JJ - After a tip from our buddy Ernie F. , I went to Tiger's shop, A-1 Performance. It's on Grand Avenue in Santa Ana. Amazingly, even with the booming business he does with his exhaust systems, he does not have a web-site.
Anyway, I arrived in the morning for my appointed time and left the car with Tiger. They flanged the j-tube (better fit and less leaks), installed the Sidewinder with a MagnaFlow (?) exhaust. It has a nice throaty sound (especially under accelleration) without being an obnoxious loud drone while at cruising (highway) speeds.
My car was done a few hours later and my bill was under $500 (non-ceramic). Well worth the trip to Santa Ana for a quality exhaust system.
Peace - Out

That's a heck of a price, Jim. Obviously it pays to cut out the middle man.

Jim now that price is more in the budget, did you have to go get the car tuned to the pipe somewhere else also? How much was that? What kind of horse power did you gain do you think? Were there other options to gain more horse power through exhaust?
JJ - I didn't prep the car in any way (tune-up, etc.). I just rolled into Tiger's shop and they went to work. Once the j-tubes were flanged, and the extractor installed with sidewinder, I asked Tiger to give it a center-exit single-exhaust. I later trimmed that tailpipe by 2 inches for driveway clearance and added a chrome tip I got from Pep Boys.
My engine is a measely 1835 w/dual Kadrons and mild high-lift rocker arms, so its peppy enough for my driving style (beach cruiser) but I did notice a bit better accelleration (via unscientific seat-of-the-pants judgement).
Sounds cool though!

ooops...
Jim, I think that "Seat of the Pants Judgement" was the extra thrust contributing to your cars acceleration.
JJ, if you go with J-tubes instead of Dansk Heater Boxes and skip all the ceramic coating, you can come in close to Jim's 500.00 estimate. You will also get it faster. The ceramic coating seams to take Tiger or the vender longer.
JJ - I stand corrected. I have heater boxes, not j-tubes (Senior moment). Tiger welded flanges onto the exhaust pipe exiting the heater boxes...
