I know CIP1 has the little stamped steel piece for $2, but $9 shipping!!! C'mon! That's crazy. Put it in an envelope! Anyway, I looked in my vw boneyard to find them missing. Mine is so worn out, the brake and clutch won't stay put. The metal is just worn so thin. Anybody have one in their junk pile?

Oh, for crying out load..........
Get a 1/8" thick by 1-1/4" wide piece of flat metal stock at Lowe's or Home Depot or your local hardware store and MAKE ONE!
Cut the stock about 2" long or measure your old one and match it. Put a 90 degree bend in it about 1/2" from one end (or check your old one and match it). Drill a hole in the middle of the long end it to put a bolt through (check your old one and match it - the hole will be elongated - use a rat-tail file to elongate the hole). Bolt it to the floor (to the existing threaded insert - it probably takes a 10mm bolt or use your existing bolt) and move it forward/aft to get the clutch and brake pedal aligned straight up and down and more-or-less together before your tighten it down.
You're done.
Total time will be a lot less than the time it took to drive to a salvage yard one-way.

A guy emailed me just now who I gave a shift knob to.. He's mailing it to me... I could make one easily, if you guys only knew how limited my time is. I'm very busy. I maximize efficiency, which allows driving time, as opposed to fixing time.;)
Is this for real????
Why isn't it ? I work and travel on the road, I order little pieces I need, and when I get home, I tweak on my car. What am I supposed to do? Go home to Nashville and on my 2 days off, spend a day looking for the piece, waste a few hours going to/from Lowes scratch building a tiny annoying piece, OR.... OR.... find one online, get it, and have it waiting when I get home. Take your pick. If you have a local job, work 9-5, you don't understand. Try being on the road a lot, it's very frustrating to waste time at home. So yeah, it's for real. A member had one, and is mailing it to me. Guess he remembered the shift knob I mailed him for free.... The power of the Internet and friendly forum members is incredible.
So I do not need the part anymore...
So I do not need the part anymore...
I'm sure the Post Office appreciates the business - be sure to use one of the overnight express priority envelopes.
I guess I'll never ask my fellow Speedster Owners for any help on buying parts or aquiring parts... Thanks to the one guy who came through...
Hey KW, don't get bent. They mean well. People on here have varying degrees of mechanical ability, money, experience, time, & tools, and often make suggestions in line with their situation that don't align with yours. I'm no exception. As an example, I hate clutch cables and have recommended hydraulic. That's partially because I had the money, but no time, tools, ability, or skill. There's an awful lot of good on here, but you have to wade through it and make your own decision.
At one point, I was a certified welder. I can run a mill and a lathe. Lowes is 45 minutes away to buy angle iron, etc. Sure I could easily fab one. It's just not worth my time... I'm glad to be working and blessed with a job, but this is just not worth my time. Again, I'll source my parts , etc elsewhere.
oops....sorry.....had a reply but came to my senses and went to bed.
I thought you went to bed kind of early Gordon. Then I saw the time on this post is 3 hours off.
I'm glad you can still stay up until almost 11.

Keith, don't go disappearing on us over one thread. We can't all know what each others' circumstances are, and Gordo's sarcasm is borne of humor, not curmudgeonliness.
Clearly, you're a man of constructive actions and not just words, and you're asking crucial questions while on the road to make your time in front of the car more meaningful in the man-hours vs. results ratio. That's cool -- but we didn't know that. I certainly didn't, anyway, but now the volume of questions and that explanation make perfect sense.
I applaud you for getting those questions out there and for doing your own work. So does Gordon. Don't take that one comment for more than what it was; he's been doing this a long time ( he invented the shock absorber or some damn thing), and sometimes it's hard to read the smile he's got on his face when helping guys here to realize they have the potential to make some of the smaller repair parts right at home.
He doesn't need me to put words in his mouth, but I value both of you and felt like throwing my two cents in.
:)

Well, I am king of sarcasm, but I gave up trying to be sarcastic over text/forums long ago. Thanks man, I appreciate it. I was talked into staying by another member, because honestly, I just like life too much to hang out where people are dicks, and that's kind of the way I took it....
Oh some of us may well be dicks (I know I am), but we're still great to have a beer with. Since you're in Nashville (a fine town) you should join the southeast contingent of crazies for one of our gatherings. Too bad you just missed the Asheville get together.

"he invented the shock absorber or some damn thing"
You sure it wasn't it the Wankel . . . ?
You sure it wasn't it the Wankel . . . ?
Wish you would get it right- it was the Atkinson-cycle engine.....
Just kidding....
KW, let me apologize for my sarcasm. I didn't realize I had become so crass this summer.
You see, I've been under a lot of stress lately, taking care of my 91-yr-old mother after she broke her hip and was hospitalized. She passed away just a little over a week ago after three months in hospital. I guess the stress of everything lately has just gotten to me and I now realize that I need some time to myself and some well-deserved rest.
Sorry for being a PITA, and best of luck with your CMC.

Gordon, sorry for your loss... That's tough. No hard feelings here...
Sorry to hear about your mom Gordon.
Sorry for your loss, Gordon.
Sorry to hear that Gordon. You've had a very rough couple of years.

I'm SO sorry Gordon!
I ended up splitting the forum for a spell after my father went into the hospital and later died. Remember when I was "Forum Prick?"
Honestly though, I think that you're more fun with a sharper edge . . . try not to go back entirely to that ol' dish rag that you used to be, OK?
TC
OK, who can we all gang up on next? Maybe "Dusty" will return, he was always good "tease meat," especially when he dragged "Miss Ellie" into the mix. That guy left himself open to a bow shot SO often, and I held back like a good 'ol boy.
Maybe he'll come back and get ventilated like he deserves . . . . HELL, I got four hundred dollars in my pocket, maybe I ought to buy a belt for my fuckin' car ? That sounds like a good investment for a fiberglass fake ! ? ! ? ! ? !

Not LME it was LMS ...:~)
Thanks, guys. I appreciate it. It has been a very difficult 18 months for me with three cool people dying in my family in short order - my era and the one before it is dwindling quickly. Thank heavens that the next generation is stepping up to the plate.
I talked with TC about this at a car show mid-summer and know he went through some of this in his family, too. But this forum is not the place to talk about my problems and I really need to take a break for a while to recharge a little, as I feel totally drained. Those of you who've gone through something like this will understand, I'm sure. We've been in New England now since early May, had a lot of stress and now just want to go home and watch the sunsets. Maybe eat some seafood......and some Southern fried food, too!
Oh, and drive my Speedstah. Been really missing that. I'll lurk and check in once in a while, maybe attend the Hilton Head Island Concours, but both of us just need some downtime after all this.
Be cool.
Ciao, gn
