The loose nut behind the wheel needs a spare rim.

Older 4" or 4.5", just to mount a skinny spare on. Spyder has different front and rear sizes, so that's why I want a skinny "just in case" spare. I am thinking a 145 or 155, or possibly a 911 collapsible tire.

Please if somebody has one, bring it to Carlisle, just let me know how much you want for it.

i know.

you can get a stock wide 5 (smoothie or not) with e width of 4" or 4.5" and mount a space saver tire on it from any car that came with a 15" space saver.

there is no need to balanace them, so any shop can do the mounting. i did have one shop say they wouldnt mount the space saver because of the amount of pressure, etc... then i went to walmart and paid $7 to mount it. LOL
Oh, I see what you did, Paul. I misread the post. That tire and rim sits really nice and flat where you have it.

I can't over some of these shops that won't do a service for you.
I've mentioned to a few tire joints about putting my car on the alignment rack and they look at me like I have two heads; even after I tell them it's no more than a VW beetle chassis.

The 911 spare is likely too wide. I have a rim from a 911 that we removed the tire from, thinking I could use the rims on my Speedie. The offset put the tire against the fender on the rear, so no go. I do have a rim or two from old VW's, they're rusty and missing a clip or two or three for the hub cap. If blasted and painted, they would do for a spare. You may have one for he shipping--or I could haul one to Carlisle. Let me know. email is weyand at raex.com
John, that would be great. A spare wide-5 wheel and just the tire(my friend has lots of 911 stuff) from an early 911 should make a nice compact spare. My car has 185/65 on the front and 195/60 in the rear. I would try it first but I think it will fit. If you can't scrounge one let me know.
I will rummage the corner stash of stuff in the the barn tonight and I'm sure that I can find one. It may be missing some hub cap clips--maybe you just want them removed so it doesn't scratch stuff in the trunk? I'm sure it will require sand blasting and some paint. I have a good friend who runs a salvage (auto recycle business) yard and lots of those compact spares are lying about. I will ask for a 15" tire and maybe have one by Carlisle. If the kids are visiting and looking for something to do, I'll let them blast it. If that gets done, do you want it painted silver? I'll check tonight and let you know tomorrow.
Danny, For some reason your last post wasn't on the screen when I put in the last post. There is no charge for the wheel--if I have to pay for the tire, I'll let you know. Since my Speedie is quivering naked in the shop awaiting its first "coat" of primer, I'll be driving my Colorado PU or Mom's '99 Beetle, so space is no problem--so long as you can get to Carlisle without a spare.
Thanks John, and thanks Carey. I haven't had a spare since I put it on the road in 2005 and 10K miles. I always figured I'd call a flatbed if I needed it. I will be dragging my 550 again behind my Subie like last year. It just worked out easier in the rain. This year I am bringing some stuff that won't fit in the Spyder well. So plenty of room for a spare wheel!
Daniel, My server told me it couldn't connect to your email address. I was at the salvage yard yesterday and was offered a compact spare (size 125-70-15). I mounted one of these on a 4 inch VW wheel some time ago and it fits fine (this tire is on a 4 inch wheel now.) Since I have the tire changer in the shop, I could mount this tire easily for it's trip to Carlisle. But perhaps you have some other tire in mind. Let me know if you want me to mount this compact spare. I dropped of six wheels at the sand-blaster on Monday and expect them back early next week, so the wheel will easily be ready for the May celebration. You know this will cost some liquid refreshment, right?
