There are very limited options for coupes at this time. You can go the used route but since not as many were built there aren't as many available on the used market.

There are only a few people building new coupes and the wait can be long. Vintage Motorcars is the closest for you since they are located in Hawaiian Gardens, CA. Greg builds a Pre-A bent window coupe on a VW chassis and they are very well done cars.

Carey Hines at Beck - Special Edition is building a coupe based on the 356 B body style if I'm not mistaken but there is at least a year long wait. It might even be two years. As soon as people found out he was building one the pre-sale list sold out quickly. He is close to finishing the first and second cars. The first car is going to Chuck Beck and the second car is going to our own Lane Anderson.

Then there is JPS Motorsports but I have no personal experience with them. There is a multitude of information on this site regarding JPS products and the man himself. You either love him or you hate him. Educate yourself before you sign on the line with him. Most people find it better to buy a used JPS product than having to do business with him.

Whatever you do, just remember, it's a replica. It will never do what the original will do in terms of comfort, fit, finish, etc etc. But if taken care of I don't see why a coupe replica couldn't work as a daily driver.

Robert,

Thank you for the info. I plan to look for a second hand Coupe. Will give the search a year then reevaluate. Is there anywhere else I should be looking besides Craig’s List?

I think you’ll find a variety of responses to this inquiry as everyone’s standards are different. I have a Vintage Speedster built in 2013 by Kirk. It meets all my needs. But once you drive an Intermeccanica, you’ll understand why they are priced so much higher than a VS.

Then it comes down to your specific wants. I bought my VS knowing that it was what I call an great entry-level Speedster into the hobby.  This term is not meant to be derogatory; as a VS makes a great “forever” car as well.

Special Edition / Beck is very helpful and a regular contributor to this site. Greg, with Vintage in Hawaiian Gardens, also chimes in on this site; which I found very helpful.

As far as options, engine sizes and the like, I’d consider that a personal preference that should be handled by a test drive. There’s a great map section to this group where you can identify members close to your location.  While I can’t speak for all SOC members, I know a majority are very accommodating and would love to show off and explain their speedsters to those showing interest.

Thanks Kevin.

i see you too are from Bay Area. I hope to have a Coupe soon and maybe drive some of our incredible coastal ‘twisties’ with you in the near future.

Just type "Porsche 356 Coupe Replica" in your search browser and let Google do its stuff. I wouldn't limit myself to CL or eBay.

Beck Coupe #1 is Carey Hines’ (runs the company) car and is at Carlisle this weekend.  I drove it this morning and even though it is the earliest prototype it is pretty fantastic with only s handful of changes planned for production.  Chuck Beck’s car is the second prototype and mine is to be the first production car, although in truth it will still be a little bit of a prototype as well.  They’ve already sold the first year’s production slots and while they want to get them out as quickly as possible, they’re taking the time to make sure it’s right.  It’s helping me work on my patience 😬.  If you think you might be interested I would go ahead and contact them for info and possibly to reserve a slot.

SB  100 Process is a pain but "doable"  main steps were:

Pre Step 1   Get a CERTIFICATE OF SEQUENCE  from DMV that says you are building a Special construction Vehicle.   Usually have to get to DMV manager because the desk clerks frequently do not have a clue what this is.

1.  Get a VIN assigned by CA highway Patrol VIN officer ( fortunately, I live about 3 miles from a CHP Station)   (No $)

2. Brake and Light inspection  ( $170)

3. DMV Registration Fees ( $238)  Issue a Temporary Operating permit for 3 to 6 month

4. BAR   ( Long story--- Do not like these guys as they said that my car would not qualify as a Special construction...... DMV did not Agree and issued me an exemption from SMOG  based upon the BODY STYLE of a 1957 356 A coupe versus a 2006 Subaru engine.  BAR wanted me to have crash bumpers, air bags, etc....... No %$###!!@ way. So, no smog inspections going forward :-)

5. FTB CA  ( CA Franchise Tax Board)  Wanted to assess me a $3800.00 " Use Tax" in lieu of a "Sales TAx".   I bitched and moaned and after about 4 months of back and forth,  FTB granted me an Exemption Certificate so I did not have to pay tax. Whew!

6. Insurance - I opted for carrying just Liability and no comprehensive ( $238 through USAA)  driving 1000 to 2000 miles a year.  If I crack it up... tough tacos, Chris

Hagerty would not insure it unless I carried Comprehensive with a $500 deductible. they wanted about $1,100/ year for that.

Hope that helps.  Lots of fine points but you can get through the process..... It just takes patients and dealing with the sloths that live at you local DMV.  ( but, there are some nice sloths!)

Persevere and Vroom, Vroom

Chris:  Sounds a LOT like what I went through in Massachusetts - I swear, the two DMVs must be in Kahoots.

I am unfamiliar with the BAR (and don't really want to be, either) but what office is it?  I think we may have something similar here called the "Motorist Assistance Center" (MAC) but they often dispense more grief than assistance, especially to the Hot Rod crowd.  Honestly, they treated me really well and never even took a look at the car - they just "grandfathered" it in for an emissions waiver (mostly because the engine was built before 2007 - I don't know what the logic is there).

BAR is the California Bureau of Automotive Repair or as everyone calls it BAR.

They were created in the 70's to license and investigate automotive repair facilities to protect consumers from fraud. But like all government agencies they expanded and so did their authority.

For souces of cars also check the SAMBA and bring-a-trailer.  The most authentic coupe out there (not originally Subaru powerd but easily converted) is the Envemo coupe built in Brazil around 1980-83? and sanctioned by Porsche (way back).  Many OEM parts used with a Brasilia pan and VW air cooled 1600 cc engine.  It is later body style like the Beck SE.

I was actually hunting an Envemo (passed on one in St. Louis  at Moto Exotica - beware of those characters!) , when I found my IM Roadster in Miami.
The Envemo quality I saw was a bit iffy? Of course considering the time frame they were built, they did an excellent job. Love the Cabriolet with glove box ,window frame etc... but I must say, that is a car you would really want to see first.

Bk to the Posie coupe, that has Great potential. Wish I were in the market.

Good luck SF . Have fun looking.
(As you can tell, this is a online forum you will want to join.)

Yes, the first year of production of the new Beck Super Coupe is already sold out via word of mouth.  I believe the Mullis' grabbed the last spot, which is spring 2020 delivery.  We'll be opening up the next batch of 6 spots later this year...

I do have an '83 ENVEMO coupe project available however.  It is complete, yet partially disassembled.  Contact me if you'd like further info on it. I'll be selling it  "as is" (although I'd be willing to do some light assembly on it so things didn't have to ship in boxes) but the wait on having it as a completed car would be no different than waiting on a new build as ALL of the departments are busy here...

The first 12 coupes are all being spec'd the same, sans one rear engine request.
2.5L Subaru (0 mile motor) w/ a Subaru 5 speed gearbox (automatic available at no extra charge). A-arm front suspension w/ adjustable coil-overs.  Rack and pinion steering.  Bottom mounted inverse a-arm rear suspension  w/ parallel trailing arms and adjustable coil overs. Full leather.  All the proper trim, bumper guards w/ exhaust exit on rears,  Heat and AC.  $65K
