hey guys, I'm a newbie...
I'm really intersted in getting a used VS. Used, since the max I'm really wanting to spend is around $13,000. Anymore, and I feel it's just worth buying a new one from Kirk himself. Been wanting one since I was a kid. Had a '63 B coupe and just wasn't happy, it wasn't a Speedster...
I really would like a silver one the most! Original style only please, no wide bodies...
Anyone can send me possibles/pics to jjhacker@bellsouth.net
Thanks for your time and help!
jay
PS(oh yeah, I'm in Tennessee if there's anyone close).

Hey, John is almost right next door to you. I'm guessing a nice used VS, few years old with not much modification and a mild engine could be had for around $13k. You'll have to agressively track the usual sources; classifieds here, ebay, samba. I paid a bit more than that for my used VS but it had an upgraded engine, alarm, cd player; found it in CA. I think about the same time or a bit later John sold his VS to somebody in CA. Let us know when you get one, we'll rendezvous.
been doing the ebay/classifieds thing- but what's samba? there's a silver one with no extras in SC going for 14,500 right now on ebay, still has another day left on it, so it'll be more. there was a silver one that just went out of hemmings out of OH with all the extras for 12,900- just like i want- made me sick...
I know its hard to be patient once you've been bitten by the Speedster bug, but there will be more for sale, just keep your eyes peeled. Samba is a great site for anything/everything VW related, I've had good results getting misc parts through it; dubya dubya dubya dot thesamba dot com.
You might also want to try dubya dubya dubya dot hemmings dot com. Just one more place to look. Unfortunately, our part of the country is not planted as thick with Speedsters as, say, California. You could probably find exactly what you want there, but you would be faced with the drive home or about a thousand dollar trucking bill. I know Greg went the drive route and I think had a pretty good time doing it. I sure did, both ways, last April.

Listen, I emailed about that silver one on EBAY 6 times before they responded. It sold on EBAY, but the buyer did not follow through, THEN the seller contacted me. After emailing a few more times requesting a test drive, the seller said I probably would not be happy with the car. BEWARE! I think something is up with that car.
If you are interested in a used McSpeedster contact JPS, Vintage or IM. Often they are contacted by clients who want to sell their cars.

Kirk, John and Henry will likely know the car and if its in the area will be happy to look it over for you, which would be very helpful if you are from out of state.

I would buy a used car via a referral from any of them before I would buy a stranger's car off eBay -- that's for dang sure.
Thats an excellent tip for anybody starting out looking for a used one. When I was looking a couple years ago I contacted John at JPS, he had one available right then, an older IM he was refurbishing, I hesitated and missed out on it and ended up buying from an individual. But contacting the builders to see what they might have is definitely a good way to start.
