Vince - you are so right! "Youse guys" (I'm originally from New Jersey) on the coast just don't appreciate how easy you have it. I was looking for about 18 months, and finally ended up going to the Beck build at the car show in Carlisle, PA (yes, from Oklahoma). At that point I was able to actually see and sit in a few cars... Some folks are just crazy enough about these cars to do some homework. Best of luck in your search - it will be, indeed, worth it! Cal

nothing wrong with buying new, except that i was hoping to save some money in this, my first forray into kit car ownership.
i am hoping to "test the waters" to begin with, and if it fits my needs, then sell the first speedster and, with a better understanding of which company produces a speedster ideal for me, then take the larger leap into new car territory.

understand, my budget can handle a $16,000-$20,000 used car without a problem, but as i get deep into the $25,000-$30,000 new-car range, i want to make sure i'm getting into a hobby that's gonna "stick".
Bruce: Here i have intermecannica speedster and i'm selling it. the car is located here in Southern Cali. with cali strick emmission law i can't register this car. it is currently registered in florida. it got AC line but there no AC. bucket seat. 1835 engine with dual carb. new top and cover. oriodouble at yaahoo dot com. Asking $10k. if you're southern california, in order for you to purchase this car and register it.. this car must go thru referee and to be exempt from smog.. it must have '74 engine and older with all original emmission parts for it. any question please email me.

I'm telling you, a VS for $19,500 would be a very stripped down version. That would be without things like front disc brakes, tonneau cover, stereo, and possibly trunk carpet. I didn't do every option but I got what I thought were the most important items. That was $3575 above the base price. The base price is really a come on. You pay it at build time or down the road but you will pay it.
You're right in that sense but who needs a stereo in these cars? With the basic car you get a quarter tonneau cover (I guess that's what it's called; it's just the back part that buttons down to the body and you roll the top and store it underneath). The disc brakes and all the rest he can upgrade down the line and have fun doing it; if he likes working on cars. With respect to engines at build time it's better to install one built by a respectable outlet such as Chico Performance, CB Performance, etc. or just buy the stock engine and upgrade it down the road by tearing it down. Unfortunately the larger displacement engines that VS offers are just stock VW Mexico motors that get torn down to get larger cylinders and heads bored accordingly and put back together with stock everything. Heck, just last month I tore down my 1915 to install new ported CB 044 40 by 35.5 heads, upgrade some valve train components with Gene Berg stuff, including 1.25 ratio rockers, install Dellorto 40's and large diameter heater boxes with Tri-Mil muffler. Before then I found out that the OEM VW fan housing and tin worked the best and swapped it along with retrofitting the stock thermostat & flap system which it didn't have.

What I mean is that he can get along with the basic new car, order it with the color combo he wants and drive it right away and slowly upgrade it down the line without having a large initial cash outlay. Remember upgrading it and having fun while doing it is part of the process!

Hi Bruce. I am the one with the car for sale on Craigslist. It's a totally loaded VS with 1915 engine, 3.88 trans, A/C, CD Radio, Haartz Top, Fuchs wheels, etc. Only 6,500 miles, and looks brand new. Black with black top and grey interior. I'm looking for low $20's. Give me a call at 954-471-3130 if you are interested. Thanks.
