Chris,
I will be out of town for the car show. But I would be happy to show you my car any time.
Brooks
Brooks, my wife and I will make it to Friday Harbor Friday afternoon. We have some business to take care of in Port Townsend in the morning, but will hit the local ferry to FH from there. Have to be back in Portland Sunday evening so unfortunately won't make the BBQ/crab thing.

Brooks, we're in for your BBQ/Crab fest. I called the B&B and they have all rooms on tentative hold for some ladies fitness retreat until July 15th. If they don't fill the retreat by the 15th they will cancel and open up for regular business. I'll take my chances and wait and see. Sorry you are missing the Campout next weekend.

Hello from Bonnie & Greg Bonnell in Victoria,
We dock in Friday Harbour on 29th at 7:30pm. We'll be staying at the Olympic Lights B& B if you want to leave a message where dinner will be in Roche Harbour. We'll be bringing the 'ol two seater (Zermatt Grey Roadster). We are booked through the 30th on San Juan Island and are really looking forward to the trip. I've only sailed there (in the 70's) and Greg has never been to the island.

I'm trying to get my act together for this gathering and just want to clairify, it's two nights (29th and 30th) in Friday Harbour, and one night on Lopez? Is that right?

Hey Ron, Brooks is away until the 13th. Several couples are booked into the Friday Harbor Inn on the 29-30 and we also plan to stay on Lopez on the 31st but will wait until July 15 to book there in case the B&B next to Brooks' cabin drops the retreat and has room for regular folks like us.
Glad you're thinking of attending. Should be one fine weekend.

I'm sad to say I will not be able to make it up to the San Juans that weekend.
I was able to make it up to Orcas with my car last weekend for the 4th of July and I have to say everyone that goes will have a blast. The roads on Orcas (and the rest of the islands) are perfect for our little cars. When on Orcas make sure to hit Crow Valley Road and Enchanted Forest Road and go up to the top of Mt Constitution. Keep an eye out for the cops!
See you all next year.

Here is a short movie on Orcas last weekend.

The picture below is on the way to Anacortes between Conway and LaConner . For those coming from South I-5, get off at Conway (before you get to Mt Vernon), then go left over the freeway, the right through Conway. Keep on the main road which will eventually connect back into Rt 20 which will take you into Anacortes. Much more fun way to go than just taking I-5 to Burlington and then Rt 20 West.

Nice video clip. OK, now for my one-liners:
Were you lost Chris? ....
It must have taken a long time to get there driving the roads like that....
Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
And the guys from the North should get off I-5 and onto Chuckanut drive. It's a nice winding road alongside the Bay.

Hi guys,
I just got back from my vacation. I just wanted to catch up on who was going to be arriving and when. Will anyone be able to cruise around Orcas on friday the 29th.? Reading the posts, it sounds like most of us may be getting to Friday Harbor friday afternoon or evening. Just a word of warning,if you plan on leaving Anacortes on friday afternoon for Friday Harbor plan on being in the ferry line at least two hours early.
I will be on Lopez on thursday the 28th. and I plan to cruise around Orcas on friday the 29th. I plan on taking an afternoon ferry from Orcas to Friday Harbor. If anyone can get away early on friday to join me please let me know and we can work out the details on how we can hook up. If you have the time Orcas is well worth the trip.
For those who can't get away early on friday to do Orcas, there are a few good brew pubs where we could meet up on friday evening in Friday Harbor.
I also need a head count on who will be at the BBQ at my place on Lopez on sunday so I will know how much salmon and crab we will need.

Brooks, we are still trying to get a reservation. If we can't get in at the Friday Harbour Inn, what else do you recommend? We aren't sure yet what time we will arrive on Friday, but we should probably pass around some cell phone numbers so we can contact each other and get together. Mine is 604 220 4141.

Brooks, we plan to follow your original suggestion of arriving at Anacortes around 08:00 to catch a 10:00 sailing to Orcas. Do I have that right? Yes, we will be staying on for the Lopez BBQ and have booked into the Carriage House which I understand is beside your place so we're ready. Let the good times roll! (604-819-0577)Cell

Hey Rick, we are staying at the cottage next to you on Sunday night.
So that means we will be at dinner at your place Sunday Brooks.
We are expecting to get going early Friday but might not make the 10am ferry with Rick so we'll have to catch up to you guys. We are doing a bike trip on Vancouver Island Monday to Thursday so the turnaround to Friday morning in the Roadster will be tight but we'll get going as quick as well can.
Looking forward to meeting you folks.

Hi guys,
It looks like Rick will be joining me on friday for the tour around Orcas. We will catch the 4:35 PM ferry to Friday Harbor. I think we should all try to meet up at Roche Harbor for dinner on friday night and make plans then for the rest of the weekend.

Bruce, are you going to be joining us? I haven't seen you post about this lately. There are still rooms at the Orca Inn at Friday Harbour. I'm looking forward to meeting you so I can thank you personally for your offer to run me to Fresno last year.

Ron,
No, sorry I won't be making it since I have family coming in to visit. I don't know if you were aware of my problems with Speedy last year but my taxi to Fresno wouldn't have happened in any case. Coming down the Grapevine into the LA basin my engine expired in a cloud of smoke. I did make it to Knotts due to the kindness of your fellow countryman, Rick Davis. I flew home, in fact caught a cab to the airport with Henry. I never did see you at Knotts so always assumed your plans changed at the last minute. In any case we'll meet up one of these days, maybe sooner than later.
Regards, Bruce

Yeah, I read about your adventure on the forum. I am thanking you for the offer, as I didn't end up needing the ride. We had an emergency in the family and I didn't end up getting to Knotts. From the latest comments, it doesn't sound like I ever will!
We'll miss you on the islands. Maybe next year.

FYI those making this tour should log on to www.sanjuanislands.com and check the links regarding ferry schedules/routes along with maps and other areas of interest.
We will make the Friday 10:00AM sailing from Anacortes which will pick up Brooks at the Lopez Island terminal then another stop on Shaw Island and arriving at Orcas Island before Noon.
Brooks suggested that after our drive of Orcas we take a 4:30ish sailing from Orcas to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island which arrives about 5:15PM. I'm sure Brooks can pick a decent "watering hole" in Friday Harbor where we can rendezvous before heading out for dinner.
7 days and counting......

Hi guys,
Rick and I will plan on being at the Front Street Ale House in Friday Harbor across from the ferry terminal at about 6 p.m. on Friday. From there, around 7 p.m., we will drive to Roche Harbor Resort for dinner and drinks on the deck at the bar overlooking the marina. Sunset at Roche Harbor is one of the greatest views in the San Juans. For those arriving after 7:30 plan on joining us in Roche. Its about a twenty min. scenic drive.
See you Friday!

The San Juan Islands Tour is in the history books now and it was fantasic! Many thanks to Brooks and Carol Walton for their efforts in making this event happen.
The weekend started early on Friday morning when we met Brooks and Carol when they boarded the ferry enroute to Orcas Island for a day of cruising. As our well used Speedster had sprung a leak on a rear wheel brake cylinder which I discovered at the 11th hour, we drove our '71 911T.
After a fabulous tour of Orcas which included a drive up Mt. Constitution for a 2400 ft. vista of the Islands and mainland from Vancouver, B.C. Canada in the north to almost Seattle to the south!
We then ferried over to San Juan Island Friday afternoon to meet up with the other Speedster/Roadster owners at a pub in Friday Harbor. We drove to famous Roche Harbor for dinner that evening.
Saturday had us touring San Juan Island enjoying the casual pace and places of interest including a stop for view Orca whales breaching while passing the Island southbound. This is what the San Juans are all about!
Sunday some had to head home and others ferried over to Lopez Island for a Salmon BBQ at Brooks' and Carol's place. We even got some Island culture with a professional theatre group's presentation of Othello at Lopez Island Winery on Sunday evening.
Photos are posted (rdavis) for your enjoyment. They will hopefully give you a hint of the beauty and fellowship we all enjoyed.

Yes, a good time was had by all. The company was great, the wildlife was great, and the driving was great.

True, the wine, the weather, the whales, the eagles, the views, the sunsets, not to forget the Alpaca headgear, are all fantastic memories, but for Carol and I, it was really the great people that made this weekend such a special event.
By the time everyone arrived at our house on Lopez it was obvious that all stress was left on the mainland, as it should be!! Rick, Ron and Henry even got the hang of the Lopezian "wave" in record time.
For those who could come, a big thankyou from Carol and I for letting us share the Islands with you.For those who were not able to join us this year, no worries, we are already planing and even better event for next Summer.
