I gotta tell you, every time I look in the garage,I can't help but smile,I couldn't give a shit if it was the real 150K jobber or my little 30K Beck.
I figured if I sold my other vehicles,(I have 5 cars) I could easily buy ONE real restored speedster in the 150K range
,but then I would never drive it,and I would only have 1 car! If I were to spend that much dough the Audi R8 V10 would be a better choice for me than a real speedster, hell I would be scared to even drive it,I would worry about driving it by the ocean because of rust,I would be scared of paint chips and mortified if there were any major rust or engine issues,at this stage in my life (I am 41) I just don't see that as "fun or enjoyment",I just don't have the money to "use" a speedster. It might be a nice "conversation piece" sitting there and driven to shows, but that is no fun, what if it rains???
It is so cool to know I can just jump in my Beck and fire it up,and if something breaks it is pennies to fix compared to the real deal,it will NEVER RUST (I HATE RUST,it is depressing),parts are all obtainable and hell the real deal has only 70 HP or 115 if you have a 800K Carrera, but my little put-put has 136HP! The thrill is there, and so is inexpensive, stylish open-top motoring, which is like cheating since it is not just a luxury of the well-heeled any more.
Just like silicone boobies, yeah they are not "original" but I usually hear more compliments, than complaints!
I can tell you that the real deal is 5-15X more expensive, but I could not IMAGINE them being that much more enjoyable. Ofcouse those that spent the $$ will tell you otherwise,I just see our little speedsters as TOO much fun for the money! Yes if I was Leno I would have a REAL one and a Beck.........but I am not
I love my little Beck!

Thomas,
Your preaching to the choir. I've concluded the wrath from the P-people is more about frustration and envy than feeling replica owners are lesser human beings. They are exposed by protesting way too much. The scornful ones are hamstrung by their peers and not permitted to think or create outside the box. I too would love to have a real speedster like some of them possess, but only so I could immediately sell it and go have some real fun with the money.
Thomas:

The reasons you state are exactly the ones that made me buy my Speedster.

Where else can we get a modern car with modern components that gives us the feeling of old fashioned sports car driving, without the fear of breaking down each time we head out?

I looked at a number of options, most of which were 1960s sports cars, but none could be used on a regular basis on modern roads.

Modern 'sport cars' are more concerned with electronics and driving you instead of you driving them.

I wanted a bare bones, seat of the pants driving machine, but with modern reliability. And that's what I got!

Come Spring up here, I'll be very happy.
I really don't care what the P-people think of my tub, and in fact it's more fun when I see them than not... I love telling them its a replica or turn-key... because every corner I hit and I mean EVERY corner.. the 3 other cars sitting at that intersection are ALL looking at MY tub and giving me a thumbs up and smile.... Where else can you do that for 15 to 20K out of pocket?

Speedster "D" just saying!
At last Saturdays Anaheim Porsche event I asked how much for the "real" rear reflectors. $250 he said without even blinking and when I must have grimaced he said (with disdain) or these fakes for $25. I walked away smiling because I had recently placed my $250 in Troy's hands for his cruising windows. Something that isn't original but looks cool and you won't see on an original. But then if I had that 150k original Speedster sitting in the garage I probably would have snapped up those cheap $250 reflectors.

Saturdays Anaheim Porsche event was well attended, as I sat in line to get in I had one of the organizer give me a great compliment by saying I had the best looking car up to that( more than 2 cars in line) point, I found that interesting sitting in a line of mostly original Porsche's.
Beauty is where you see it !
Some pay way to much for it !!

Cabanaboy Springtime - Friday was 84 :)

"it will NEVER RUST"

Oh are YOU in for a surprise, the body may not not rust, but be prepared for all of that repro crap that's attached to it to head South over the course of not too many years, months for the pot metal pieces.

Plus you may have a VW spine, but chances are extremely good that you have cheap-ass Brazilian/Mexican/Indian pans that were plug welded in place without the benefit of weld-through primer as a first safety coating. The rear support cage is crappy mild steel, the additional metal bits and pieces were sourced as cheaply as possible to maximize profit in a VERY tight repro market.

Chromed wheels? Repro nipple caps? Those rust in the shipping boxes.

Granted, the shape is beautiful no thanks to anyone but Porsche. There's a really strong chance that the wheels aren't centered in the wells, and some flattened areas are present from the "original" prehistoric plug.

Wonderful cars, but be prepared for a severe dose of reality that will make a little body shell rust seems like it belongs on your wish list.
"Show me one that's as you depict."

Cory's helping a new friend restore one right now.

I'd imagine that The Dr. runs across them from time to time as well.

"Plus the repro stuff getting rusty gives the cars "patina",they are 50+ years old after all! ;)"

No, they're mostly only seven to ten years old max after all. If shit goes South in two years, it's shit. What ELSE is shit under the skin that you aren't yet aware of.

Not to bring everyone down, but these things DO rust, and rust badly if not garaged. But then, a genuine restored 356 doesn't often rust up if garaged either. Of course the fiberglass shell is safe from rust corrosion, no question, the remainder is gonna turn to crap as bad as the Beetle that it was built on top of. Probable worse because of the shitty parts used as opposed to the genuine German VW originals.
For once I'm with Vince, too much vinegar ruins a great salad. Some of theses babies have original VW parts that have lasted longer than some of our SOC members. Like your own body, you let it go to hell anything will end up on the scrap heap or in the ground. TC must be laughing his cynical ass off with the responses generated. I for one discount anything he says as nothing more as bait for the unsuspecting. Take a chill pill TC.

Jack,
I don't mind being woke up but at least wake me up with information that applies to the rule and not the exception. It is grossly unfair to potential buyers as well as the good guys that make their living building these little gems to represent them as pieces of crap that will look like hell and be a wasted investment in 2 or 3 years. They are like anything else, as Nolan pointed out, if you neglect and abuse them they will probably disappoint. Take care of them and they will take care of you. The one that Cory is working on that TC referenced is hardly a 7-10 year old well cared for example.

I dont think people acctually buy these cars thinking "Im gonna leave this non waterproof tub outside to slowly rot" My guess is that people 99.9% of the time garage them and they see very little rain and moisture. My 07 VS Tub looked great from the day it came off the truck to when I sold it last year; and the new guy just improved it from there. My trim peices looked good. Only ones that I thought were very bad where the cheap Aero mirrors. Get those from Stoddard or NLA.
Tom--I should have said "stirred" everyone up.

My pan based car has over 1/4" of undercoating on it plus 3x/year inspections underneath plus checking the security of every nut and bolt. I just don't worry about rust.

As for the fun factor--I have owner two nice airplanes and have flown them all over the country many times and I can say that my little Speedater has provided far more fun than my planes ever did.

Fly ins were nothing compared to Morro Bay, Carlisle or Tail Of The Dragon.

"It is grossly unfair to potential buyers as well as the good guys that make their living building these little gems to represent them as pieces of crap . . . "

You ARE shitting me, right ! ? ! ? ! ?

This is an enthusiast's forum with an open opinion policy. It's a bit far from anything related to stroking the builders or potential buyers of these little fiberglass toys.

Oh Evil one....
Opinions are like A$$holes, everybody has one, and I discovered long ago that on this forum there are many opinions, and none of them is completely wrong or completely right.....
I hang out just to fock with everyone...I love it...

I'm on my third tub, when something rusts, I replace it, if it breaks, I get it fixed....
I don't give a rats a$$ what you think or anyone else for that matter, I believe most of the members feel the same....
I think your doing the same right now, just focking with the group..
thank you for that....

Oh MAN ! ! ! Of COURSE I'm just fuckin' with you all. You REALLY think that I'm being serious about thrashing these WAY cool little rides ? ! ? ! ? !

Once I realized that most of you are as old as dirt, I figured why not? Worst case, I'll meet up with you one day and you'll take a feeble swing at me, cover me in dried out epithelials, and I'll have to knock you down. Best case we'll shout, "Glad to meetcha," shake hands, a grab some delicious breakfast.

Either way . . . you know?

Still, fun to fuck around, isn't it ? ! ? ! ? ! ? !
