On Tuesday am I was headed out to West Virginia for a normal day driving my then empty big truck car carrier, on a country country road I came up over a crowned slight rise and rounded a curve, a school bus was stopped on the other side some 300' from where I was, I hit the air brakes and in an instant it took off,  jack knifed with an explosive bang coming to a quick stop. Didn't hit anything, stayed on the roadway, managed to back it out of the jacked position and limped it back home.

The floor is heaved torn from the frame mounts, air ride seat twisted around a bit too. Heavy damage to the left side to the tractor, stoved in and twisted the cab pretty good above the fuel tanks and also crushed the side  and twisted the open deck trailer. Seat belts work boys and girls ...... kept me tightly in place and was able to walk away with a scratch.

The tractor drive axle locked, ( loaded, would have been a much better outcome ) car trailer empty the trailer pushed. I was at an exact point in a curve and rise in the road, a "perfect combo for a jack" so it naturally took off following the crown of the road. All I reacted to was avoiding plowing into that school bus, that sucked the breath out of me, I truly believe my 41 years experience lead me the right way and lucky I stopped a good distance away. Now weighing getting another truck tractor to get me to retirement the first of the year or just hang it up now .... Sure was nice sleeping in till 7:30 the last few days though ....

OK, I see where it says "I hit the brakes . . ." but I read between the lines that something else mechanical happened/broke, that caused the lock-up.  My bad. And I guess un-hitting the brakes would not have saved your bacon, as the dynamics of the jack-knife were already set in motion at that point.  Correction of this "drift" not possible, only option: just haul it all down as quickly as possible.  Then stop by K-Mart and get some fresh undies . . .
