Bob- The recommended jetting is always on the rich side; that way they always run "out of the box" with none of the problems of being lean anywhere. This also guarantees no complaints of the "recommended jetting" melting motors (and people wanting them to replace said motors). I have stepped down 3 sizes on the main jet and 2 on the idle to get closer to optimum a/f ratio on a 1750 with 44's; this was at least part of your poor mileage problem.

What size valves are in the heads, are they properly ported, and how high (rpm) in 3rd gear would the motor go before you could feel the power levelling off? I'm not in the market for carbs right now (although yours are priced fairly), but the answers to these questions will give an idea of what venturis are installed. Al

Al, I appreciate your thoughts but they are not really pertinent to my current situation. Have installed new panchitos heads along with weber 44s, New cam, etc. Car scoots nicely but only about 125 miles on new parts, so it is too soon to make definitive statements. More later. Don't need to sell 48s. Buying this used car some 4 years ago has been interesting. Has always run well but as I began to upgrade some things I learned that I was misinformed  about what the running gear actually was. 4th gear was reportedly .89, when in fact it was .82. Reportedly, it was a 2110 when in fact I recently discovered it was a 2175 with around 6 to 1 compression. It made no difference to me financially as I was ready to change the heads and the 1st and 2nd gears of the trans anyway. I have made many changes along the way and, needless to say, I have learned a great deal. Luftig handles very nicely with my double a arm front end and my new found math tells me that I now have a bit over 8 to 1 compression with around 135 to 140 hp. The point of this is not to complain, only to inform the uninformed and smile  at my ignorance. Bona Suerte!
