...and I'm NOT complaining!

Thanks to the information and a lot of help from this forum and members, I took the plunge.  Not 1000% what I wanted, but it was too clean to pass up and is a great first Speedster to learn on.

Drove down, surveyed the car, and drove that thing back.  Top down, 120 (km/h) the whole way, learning to drive an air-cooled as I went....and (thankfully) the stereo didn't work so for three days all I heard were RPMs (and, of course, honks from truckers and other motorists giving the thumbs-up).  It was the equivalent of giving a woman a black AmEx card and sending her into a shoe museum.......or locking a fat kid in a cake factory overnight......or being Michael Jackson in a room filled with children (is it still too soon for that one?).  It was a fantasy trip.

I'm sure some of you know the car:

I can't say enough good things about the seller, the car, the experience, or the people that helped and advised me along the way.

(and those who will be helping me as I make mistakes in the future!!)

It almost paid for itself on the trip home alone, I enjoyed it that much.

And so it begins...

of course!

It was a run straight south to Atlanta, and then a slightly more 'calm' drive back over 3 days.

Vintage Speedster, Chico built 1800, and I believe 3.88 but I have yet to confirm those (and a few other) details still.  (that sounds odd, I know. It's a long story! lol)

Handles extremely well, and isn't game-changingly stiff or soft.  I love the stance and ride height; I'm not that huge myself so we 'fit'!

With my work/holiday schedule, I only had time to drive it back and leave it in Toronto before I had to come back up here.  So this weekend I'll be able to spend some more time with it.

(and trust me, I can't bloody wait!)

And please expound on the DMV ( Ontario ) 's reaction to it being registered as a VW. Did you check that out in advance...just take a chance or what ? Thanks..

Glad it worked out for you at the local licenceing office. If yours is titled as a '67 VW, how did they react to that when you exported the vehicle from the states and how did they react to that on the Ontario side of the border ? I'm just trying to get up to date info as my speedster got wrecked two weeks ago and I'm looking for a new one.

I may have more options than I thought earlier. Thanks...

well for ME (ymmv), since the car was updated (911 discs, rebuilt engine, stance, etc) I took to the 996's.  I feel it sorta "lets you know" that it's more than your regular 75hp cruiser.  And, for me to change the entire look of the car, all I have to do is buy a couple of sets of wheels.

Coming from the older Chevys, I'm a fan of the super wide whitewalls so I can see myself getting some tall whites with a chrome dome in the future.

For offset I can't comment as yet, but they're 17's and they're the same on all corners (not wider in the back).  If I'm wrong, I'll find out soon!

I was more concerned with checking rubbing, travel, and clearance issues when I picked it up (of which there are none, unless you've got a hard lock at low speeds. In that case there is a slight rub up front, but luckily I haven't visited the gym in over a year so with no power steering there's no chance of turning a tight radius anytime soon...!) but they are 5-bolt.

Might even see if I can find an OG steering wheel to match the classic wheels if/when I get them...!

Excellent purchase---you won't regret it!  I like those wheels too---they go perfectly with the car which surprises me that they do, and they bring a bit of a "modern" look to the package. Gorgeous.

Hope to see you in Carlisle---take a look under "events" for last spring's Carlisle.  Having the car is only half the fun---the spring gathering with the knuckleheads at Carlisle is the other half.

Congrats on your new ride!

Sir Lapalot, the more I look at the photo you posted of your new ride the more I like those wheels.

I search my local Craig's List and found a set for $550.

I think I'll contact a local shop that widens/narrows wheels and find out what it would cost to have them narrowed to fit under my fenders.

I suspect it would cost at least $250 per wheel.

Congratulations (sorry, I know you've told me your first name before; how about part of your screen name as your first name so this is easier?)! I didn't realize you were from Canada! Do you know what's in the engine? How high does it rev to with power? And Jeffrey asked about tire sizes- come on, we want details!

And I'm with Ron; not too sure if I like the wheels. While they may be a little too modern for me, it you like them that all that counts, isn't it? And I've found that sometimes a picture doesn't always convey the full "feeling" you get when seeing something "in the flesh", so I may have a different opinion if we ever meet. But it's a small detail, it's your car and that's all that matters.

Again, WTTM! Al

PS- Oh; looks like Ron may have changed his mind!

Ron- 2 pairs of 17x7's, narrow 1 pair 1" for the front, narrow the irs trailing arms and you'll be able to fit 195/45's (24" tall) and 215's or 225's (225/45's are 25") on the back... Come on; you know you want to!

Just think; Yokohama S drive's all the way around!
