So I am one of those people who would like a little change (only in scenery, not in camaraderie or debauchery!). Now, as you all know I had an awesome time in Morro Bay and I think Dusty and LMS do an amazing job putting the spring event together, so please do not think that the option I've put together here is a knock against them in any way because it is not. I'm simply stepping up to the plate as we were asked to do if we want change. That being said here's my proposal for 2011.

First know that what would be our usual weekend, April 23rd and 24th, is Easter and the weekend after that is still Spring Break.

DATE: June 3-5, 2011. Pushing it out will avoid the Easter conflict, avoid a conflict with Carlisle, and help with weather concerns. (This also avoids conflicts with local events)

LOCATION: Pismo Beach & Arroyo Grande (these two towns are less than 10 mins apart)

SHOW & SHINE: Saturday June 4th 9am-1pm. This allows the afternoon for driving, shopping or whatever else you would like to do, but the time is flexible we just have to let them know what are start and end times are. Village Green in Arroyo Grande http://www.arroyogrande.org/city-hall/city-departments/recreation-and-maintenance-services/parks/city-parks/village-green.html
This is a great grass park located in the Village of Arroyo Grande. The Village has shops, restaurants, bars...all within a walkable neighborhood. The use fee for this park is $75 so it'll cost each of us a couple dollars to cover that cost.
Here is a link for more information about the Village www.arroyograndevillage.org

HOTEL: Spyglass Inn http://www.SpyGlassInn.com/ has offered us a group rate of $149. They have a wonderful beach front location in Pismo Beach. There is a restaurant on site (banquet could be held there). For those arriving early/staying later, weekday rates would be $96.

BANQUET: Saturday evening at the Spyglass Inn Restaurant. Menu details will be addressed after we confirm that we will go ahead with this location. Costs will be comparable to previous banquets. Convenient location means no drinking & driving.

SUNDAY: Open for driving!

DRIVES: We can head out on the roads in the South SLO County wine region. Here's a map http://slowine.com/cm/wineries_vineyards/wine_tasting_map.html. Or we could head north on PCH to San Simeon and Big Sur.

I tried to address concerns about finding a city that welcomes us, keeping it on the central coast, having a hotel that can accommodate us and give us reasonable rates (bonus: its on the ocean), incorporate time to check out the cars and chat, find a private banquet room for us at a reasonable rate, avoid rain, and most importantly be in an area with great driving roads.

A note about room rates: I realize that this is more than was paid in the past but they've given us a significant discount off of their $199 summer rate and the staff there have been exceedingly helpful. However, if the offered rate is a significant deterrent, the Best Western Casa Grande in Arroyo Grande (http://www.bestwesterncasagrande.com/) has offered us a rate of $79 for the weekend of May 6-7 (they're already booked for the June 3-4 weekend). The Village Green Park is still available for us to use on that weekend.

Jen,

I would support the date change and location. I know the Spyglass Deli well. Many a trip from Sacramento (home) to Santa Barbra (in-laws) it was a rest stop. If dates were pushed back one more week I feel confident my wife would/could join as well. She is a teacher and likely would be done on Friday the 10th. Not sure if many others have that problem. The other benefit is it would be two weekends past Memorial Day so things wont be quite as jammed together.

Just a thought but it sounds great so far!
I'm glad to hear that initial thoughts are positive! I put a lot of thought and research into this option.

Warren & Bob, I've contacted Dusty via email.

Eddy, I don't think an April Morro trip would be happening next year simply because of the late Easter holiday. Easter will be April 24th. In addition to people having thier own Easter plans, the spring break travel period extends through the end of April. Going before Easter would definitely increase the chance of rain, so I don't think that'll be much of an option.

Whatever the final decision of the group, I'm sure we'll all end up together. Remember, the goal is to relax with good company and drive fun cars!

Thoughts from others?

Jen
Jen,
I also think a change of pace would be a good thing. Thanks to Dusty for all his effort, and hard work. I feel you picked a perfect place and a great time of year. I attended last years car show in AG, and it was one of the best places I've been to for a get together. You are correct about the great bars and restaurants within walking distance. I also like the idea of a show and shine. I really miss the one we had in Paso! Anyway, you get my vote!!!
Jen,

Great job with the suggestions! You truly stepped up to the plate as asked by many. I would be glad to go with whatever the group decides for the future and would be happy to assist in any of the planning and organizing necessary.

Thinking out loud...I wonder if an extended weekend would work! Memorial day maybe?! Of course, Pismo Beach would be packed with folks coming over from the Central Valley....Hmmmm

I agree that we need to keep Dusty in the loop if he so desires!!

First, this has been a positive thread about a fun future event, please, lets keep it that way! :)

Next, thank you to the many many people who expressed appreciation, on this forum and in private emails, for opening up a group discussion about our group event. I think the best way to keep improving our event it for all of us to share our ideas publicly, and it seems that many of you agree.

I just want to let everyone know that I have reserved the June dates above for our group (June 3-5). If we decide on something else in the next couple months we can cancel what I have holding for us. I just didn't want to lose those dates since so many people expressed support of them.

To recap what I think has been agreed on by the group (correct me if I'm wrong):
*We want to stay on the Central Coast
*We don't want rain

My initial post on this thread outlines my suggested "bones" of an event that meets those two criteria. Of course there is more planning to be done. Below, I'm reposting Warren's suggesstions that were originally posted to another thread. I think Warren summed up a lot of suggestions made by various people into one posting. I had to edit it slightly to make it fit.

Warren said:
I'll be happy to bring the gas-powered, margarita maker if you want to consider that an event. ;)

Jen, you have most of the bases covered. Rather than fumbling around, if you could post what you would like help with?
Money seems to be the biggest headache. Perhaps someone who has experience in dealing with money could handle that. I think one of our members is an accountant, although I heard he has somewhat of a spotty record.
