what adapter is needed to put an original steering wheel on a replica

I just got a 356 VDM steering wheel back from being restored and want to put it on my 86 IM but not sure where to get an adapter. I know the diameter and amount of splines but not sure where to get an adapter, any help would be appreciated.

Check CIP1, they have a bunch of VW adapters. Though I think the guys who have original wheels (Dale Bates for one) also have original steering columns? I'll be interested to hear how this works out as I may eventually be looking to do the same.

Is this an A wheel? The B/C wheel bolted right up with no
adapter.

I would bet that there is no adaptor available. I am using an original Porsche steering shaft on my car although I believe that an early VW bug shaft has the same splines. The B and C wheel, such as Kirk's is probably a direct fit on a late VW shaft.

thanks Dale I think that is most likely the case too. I had a repro banjo style wheel around with an adapter and tried mounting it and it actually would work with slight mods but it doesn't look ideal because the way the adapter is angled by starting small and getting larger rather than starting large and tapering in where it meets the wheel. It works by providing the gap needed to take up space between the wheel and the dash but really isn't ideal. here are a few pics

I may be mistaken but I think Henry used the end of my original splined shaft and cut the bottom off. Using the top splined portion, he then welded it to a late model shaft with the compression/collapsable section so I now have a collapsable shaft incase of an accident. For what ever it is worth.

Dan, are the two vertically-placed knobs on the lower left side of your dash releases for the front trunk and rear engine lid?

One is the front hood and the other is for the power top.

lol. And the 3rd is for the exhaust cut outs.

Jim W - aren't those controls on your IM for the igniters in the exhaust tip to shoot out 6-ft flames (like in our old hot days)?

Jim I..... could be, lol. But if I see 6 foot flames shooting out of my Speedster I'm un-assing with or without a fire extinguisher.
