Just got my new 2110 going. 044 heads (40/35.5), mild 110 Engle cam. Put my 40 Webers back on (28 venturies)...not very impressed. The gain from my previous 1776 was not as much as I hoped it would be. Swapped them last night for 44's (36 venturies)...what a difference! I'd love to try 48 IDFs or IDAs, but that will have to wait for a while. Probably upgrade to 48's when I get the heads worked on. The prices for 48 IDAs are getting down-right ridiculous (at least up here in British Columbia they are). I may even blow the whole wad and go for CB's fuel injection.

Ron, your cam and valve sizes are going to be the limiting factors in the size of carburetor throttle plates (bore diameter) you need. If I were you I would try 38mm venturis or the CB Performance 44 IDF "update kit" as a less expensive (and probably more practical) performance upgrade.

I had some 38 venturis for 44 IDF's but shipped them to someone that needed them; you should be able to find some or have some made at a reasonable price. Check with Art Thraen: ACEVW@aol.com (Mr. Weber Carburetor).

If you want 48 IDAs Weber has started production again at their plant in Spain, and the new prices are fairly reasonable.

Or you could have bought the nice used Dellorto 48 DRLA tri-jets I posted in the classifieds; many people prefer them to 48 IDAs, and they have the same mounting stud pattern as your 44 IDFs.

Ron, Hipo VW guys really are opinionated in the discussion of old school carbs vs. EFI. CB Performance is generally one of the leaders in VW aftermarket stuff. They built my 2110, and I have no complaints. However, an exception to their well-deserved rep is their FI, which at last look, was not even programmable, and is not considered on a par with the rest of their offerings. Look around on the CLF site. There are some great EFI systems out there, but they are pricey. Now, let's see, EFI and turbo??? Regards, Jim
Ron,

I have a 2110cc in my '67 Bug right now. Well...its on its way out of the car, as I'm selling the car, but not the engine.

Anyway...

George is right about the cam and valves being a limiting factor. One more thing I would like to know is what your compression ratio is. I was running fully welded German heads, 42 in 37.5 out, P&P, all the goodies with 9.0:1 CR and had it all match ported to 48 IDAs. Of course, the cam was also a Scat C45 w/ 1.25 rockers which would let me rev to around 7K. If you want IDAs, get them from Art Thraen or Clyde Berg. Make sure the 3rd progression hole has been drilled in the carb bodies or else IDAs are a PITA for street, IMHO. They are either "on" or "off." As in, you're at idle or you're balls-to-the-wall.

Don't go with CB FI as was previously stated. There's a guy in Vancouver, WA who does a modified CIS system for ACVWs. I think his name is Miller, do a Google search for Miller CIS or something similar.

Hold on a sec...

Okay, here's the link to the page.

I've heard good stuff about this guy, but do your homework. Don't take my word for it. Of course, if you want to spend the whole wad, you might as well look into the HAL-Tech sold by Gene Berg Ent. Es kostet zu viele Geld, mein Freund.

Well, enough rambling. You seem to have found a cure so far, switching to 44's. Get some P&P done on those chambers and see what that does for her. BTW, what exhaust are you running?

aloha,
Joel
Check out this site if any considerstion is being given to EFI.

I've run a CB Perf Ultra Comp FI with & with out Turbo on my 1915cc, as well as Kadrons. The power difference is astounding and show the kadrons obviously a comparitive weak set up.
The Kads perform adequately and efficiently for cruising. The moderate power they provide is between 2500 rpm and 4000 then they peter out. Only re-jetted for the altitude. Good efficientcy, simple, and emissions friendly.
The CB Perf FI has over 4 times the volume of throttle body area to feed the heads. 48mm throats with out the venturies reducing them.
I ran this system with Kymco 1 3/8" merged & heater boxes, using CB sugested 27 lb injectors & the two knob tweek box...Results were Increased pulling power leveling off around 4500 rpm.
With the turbo added and 1 5/8" header + J tubes, 36 lb injs, 4 knob tweek box... Hold on! Power from start to finish. The larger exhaust and injectors add a lot to the bottom side of the power band. and the T03 gets spooled up about 4000 rpm on this end which pushes the power to (for me) frightening levels 8) I have not had a reasonable/safe place to play with that upper end power. Draw backs its non-programable :/ It runs rich most of the time to be ready for the turbo needs. All the added fuel cannot be good for longevity of the cylinders. The power band is set up for ...competion! You need to have the rest of the vehicle set up for the power. Eng, trans, brakes, & suspension. And as I've run out of budget car $'s, I put my Kads back on till my engine up-grade & & & a programable ECU with a Mallory Vac dizzy.
George: By the time I went back to your post to look at it again you'd sold them.
Joel: I'm running 8.3:1 compression and a 1 5/8 " merged header with a Magnaflow muffler. Next year I may put another cam in my motor and build a stock motor to get through Air Care. With a 2110 and a hotter cam it would be near impossbile to pass our air quality testing in British Columbia.

Anyone know anything more about the CIS type FI? I know a lot of the 914 guys are big into using that on their engines. There's a even a guy running around with a CIS Type-IV with a turbo setup. Pretty clean too. Looks almost factory. Looks like it could fit in a Speedster...hmmm...
