Hi my name is Chris,  I am new to the madness you speak of. I have been lurking fora while now but ran across this 59 IM conv D (supposed manufacture date of 89 was what I was told, how can I tell?) and I pulled the trigger. I would love to get any info on the car i.e. if anyone here has owned or knows someone who has owned it. I contacted IM left a message but have not heard back yet. I was hoping they could give me original build info. It is supposed to have a SCAT motor but I don't know how to ID it? What specialty motor company in California does IM use. Also with what I have read about IM I was surprised to see that the wiring wasn't neatly in a loom, maybe previous owner worked on it? Would love to hear pros and cons of this era IM.
Also would like to know if I can get a hard top for a car of this age, it looks like IM offers them for the new model.
Thanks for any input.

Giday, Chris. I have an older IM too....somewhere back around '80 or so and was first on the road in '83. I still don't know if it was assembled by IM or just a kit by IM assembled by others. It does have a sticker type data plate on the driver's door pillar saying Automobilia Intermeccanica, Santa Anna, California, May 1978. I'm guessing mine was a kit built by others given the five year time span till it was

registered for the road in 1983.

If it were built and assembled by IM, likely things would be nice and tidy but who knows who has had their hands into it since the '80's.

You should contact Robert Ruskey at: Intermeccanica@telus.net . He's a busy man but he will get back to you. I bought a 1988 and was able to get all the info they had on the car. Your's being a 1989 is a tube frame chassis. You could get a certificate of authenticity for $75. Here's the info Robert sent me about my car (free). Henry and Robert have been very helpful all along.

Hi Jean-Claude,

Thanks you for your e-mail.

Henry was basing his response on the build year of the car (1987-88) since he didn’t have any records in front of him at the time.

Generally speaking, 1987-88 was the ‘transition year’ between building our cars on VW pans and building them on our new tube frame chassis, so some cars built in that year were still on VW pans.

I’ve looked up a brief summary record of Roadster IM12121 and it was in fact built on our new tubular steel chassis (not a VW pan).

It was the 24th car to be built using our tube chassis.

The brief record summary shows that it is a 1988 car, being ordered in October 1987 and delivered in January 1988.

It was originally Porsche Guard Red in colour and yes, it did originally leave Intermeccanica production facility with Recaro seats.

Other features originally with car as delivered:

  • Cut-pile carpet, colour: Charcoal
  • Floor mats
  • Black leather steering wheel
  • Full leather interior, colour: Black
  • Haartz STAYFAST convertible top, colour: Black
  • Recaro seats, full leather
  • 2100cc high performance engine, 140hp
  • Custom widened 7” x 15” chrome rear wheels with 195/60 x 15 tires
  • Fitted front mask/bra
  • Alpine AM/FM stereo cassette player with automatic antenna.

It was originally sold as a coach and completed into a running automobile by a company in Sumas, WA making it a ‘US Built’ car.

It was then delivered to its original customer in Del Mar, California, in January 1988.

This comprises the entire informational record available from Intermeccanica for this car.

Best regards,

Robert Ruskey
