I was watching an EBay auction for a Beck Speedster and as usual was outbid. However the winning bidder could not get financing in place, so I was offered the car at an amazing price.

When I replied to the seller, he now has told me that he has the car with him on assignment in the UK where he has been unable to register the car and needs to sell it. Next he advised me that since he is in the Armed Services, he can ship the car back to the States for free and will even have DAS ship the rest of the way to my door.

Should I trust this guy? Any way to set up an escrow account to protect myself should I decide to go through with this deal?

I appreciate any/all advice.

Steve,

If you can provide a link to the car in question I can look at it and might be able to tell you the "real" story on the car. There hasn't been one on ebay (that I can recall) that I didn't know where it resided or who was selling it...

"...in the UK where he has been unable to register the car". Sounds like BS. We've completed all SVA requirements and UK registration is not a problem, so I'd watch out.
I buy and sell a lot of cars, that said, I would never buy a car sight-unseen....I'll fly from one coast to the other with cash in hand, and every intent of flying right back if I don't like what I see...
my 58 ghis was negotiated after it fell off ebay and I flew to Florida to see and buy it...I also bought my other ghia and a 912 the same way, no money up front, they don't like it, they can lump it, to much Bull$hit out there...
Interesting. When I looked at it, the location was given as "MT. PLEASANT, United States". No state was listed, but it's interesting that the town's name is the same as my own. I smell cod, or maybe grouper. Possibly even large mouth bass.

The dash controls, and turn signal stalk indicate that it's an early Beck. I wonder when it was built. EDIT: Ah, I see, it says 2005. I believe that's correct for that setup.
Yeah, this one sold on ebay 6 months ago, and these same pictures have been used for scams on at least 2 other listings. I know the car and will pull the file in the morning and see where it currently is. Midwest I believe. Hell, there's a thread on this forum from the first scam ad, a few weeks after it legitimately sold.
Thanks Tom!

I also noticed that the "official" high bider was Beverly Hills Motorsports. My father knows the owner of this company. We'll call him in the morning and see what kind of stories he got... should be interesting. Gotta LOVE networking.
By the way Paul, they have a boutique in LA (parts and accessories) and a dealership in San Diego (Beverly Hills Motor Cars). The high bidder is legit.

Any more scams out there, bring 'em on.
Run brother run....I just read two lines of the seller's "story" and could smell SCAM a mile away....

Actually a friend of mine got taken in a similar way on Ebay. He got offered a nice Alembic bass guitar as a second offer after the first deal "fell through". He was too naive and sent the guy $1,800.00 through Western Union. He got screwed big time; turns out the scammer stole a legit Ebay account. My friend didn't even bother in getting his money back; the steep price of his lesson.
