What does the engine bay lock look like?

My car is off tomorrow to the fibreman to do some work to the car before prep and spray. Over here they put a nasty looking lock on the outside of the engine lid that works with a key. We want to mount a beetle style unit so that we can just pull a lever, and get the whole back nice and flush looking.

Does anyone have pictures on how their units lock out back?

these cars never came with a locking trunck or engine lid (hood / boot / whatever you wanna call it)

You say yours has a lock on the *outside* of the car? Are we talking a replica 356? I just can't see how that would look.

looks like the byuilders used an array of not-correct parts (plate light, lock, UFO reflectors...)

looks good still, but filling that lock hole is a piece of cake. Back it with a piece of fiberglass, fill with short strand fiberglass, top with filler. feather, primer, paint.

I installed a 1956 karmann ghia vert hood latch on my front. i looks good (correct) and locks.

The FF/CMC and other US copies may have a different shaped trunk lid and mounting area but here's link to install directions:

The pull cable knob is in the LF side door rear area.

Not very many would even consider this solution. A recessed license plate. I eliminated the pull rod. You reach your hand up into the body recess (intended for a light) above the license plate and you will encounter a lever. Move the lever with one finger and it will release the "bear-claw" rear deck clamp. The deck lid pops up enough to get your fingers under the deck lid lip and raise it.

In place of a license plate light, I use light emitting license plate hold-down bolts.

Yeah buddy, the car is FULL of non correct parts, it'll take a while to change it all out, but at least it's started.

We're looking into something custom so that it can be as slim as possible.

Electric solenoid catches can be used too - often used for hot rod doors or trunk releases.

Most kits use a Fiat 124 front bonnet latch.

I'm going to have to try a few options with regards to engine latches as the bay will be open to show off the motor at shows and I don't want some ugly latch takinfg up all of the space.
