What happens when valves go out of adjustment? Does performance drop off and does the motor run hotter and louder? Will it be detrimental to drive ? Thanks , Tom

Yes, all of that could/will happen eventually. If they tighten you could lose power,
compression, burn a valve etc..
If they are too loose, Louder valve train noise, lower performance, not as bad.

As Bruce says, the car will run hotter; it won't hurt performance (some engine builders adjust valves on high performance engines tight with no gap). VW recommends a gap of .006 on intake and exhaust valves. As has been said, with these cars, when in doubt rather loose than tight and you might just save your engine.
