Ok, so this Carlisle trip will be the first trip in my newly acquired Beck Speedster. When i went to Bremen and looked at the car I observed the top and its operation. Just about what I expected for this type of car, it will keep a good bit of water out, but it will allow a good bit of water to leak through.

I have read here on the forum that blue painters tape is used to help slow down water intrusion along the windshield. Forgive me for my ignorance, does the tape go on the inside or outside?

What about when it rains and you're on the road somewhere, not in the car. Does the tonneau cover keep the water out? I have zero experience with this. It would seem to me that a car cover would be a bulletproof way to protect the car from a deluge. Do people use car covers when away from a garage? If so, any recommendations.

Thanks.

Damn, gettin' it while the gettin' is good!

Painter's tape - outside.  Tonneau seals better than top.  I don't use cover when traveling to Carlisle.  A Shamwow is one of my favorite things in the car.  Also, I would advise drilling some holes (3) in the tub under the spare, because water will get in & you want it to get out.  If you didn't get carb rain hats from Carey, I would advise that too.

rain hats---sorta like an enema---couldn't hurt.  They are easy to install and are good insurance even though Dells and Webers have a "top" that should deflect water that falls on them, thick water could be sucked in through the filters as the velocity of air going thto carbs is pretty strong.

Couldn't hurt and might save a problem.

John Steele sells some good-looking carbon fiber ones.

Ron---absolutely---get yourself a waterproof car cover.  Get one that comes with a cable and a small pad lock. The cover has holes at the bottom of each side where the cover is at the bottom of the doors.  Run the cable through and put the lock on.  Keeps the car dri and deters snoopers. Comes in a handy bag about the size of a big pilow with a draw string.

Ok, sounds like the blue tape is the ticket plus a shamwow. How effective is the side curtain in keeping water out?

If the tonneau cover can keep the water out, I would like to avoid the car cover. I had one for my BMW Z3 and it was a pain in the ass to fold and stow. I hope to take delivery of the car in the week or so. Until then I'm kind of guessing as to how effective the tonneau is.

Rain hats look sensible. I'll check with Carey and see if he has some ready to go.

As Tom said, the tonneau tends to be more waterproof than a lot of the tops.  But it still leaks.

That said, my experience in rain (no top, no tonneau) is if you keep your speed over 50mph, most of the rain goes right over you and the cockpit and lands somewhere towards the engine cover.  The water streaming off of the windshield tends to continue to stream along the top of the door and off towards the back, seldom flowing into the cockpit.

However, slow below 50mph or stop at a light and you'll get drenched.

Don't forget a decent sized towel to bail out the foot wells front and back, too.

Very good news! I just got my flying award for may and Delta will not be needing me for 11 days before, during, and after Carlisle. So I can take my time coming and going.

This is going to be fun. Maddie and I are both looking forward to meeting everyone!

I am putting together a road kit now. Thanks to everyone who have passed along great advice.
