I saw a thread about this on the Club Cobra site and it was a fun read, so I thought I'd start one here.

I have, of course, gotten the "That sure is a cute Karmann Ghia" from a bubble-headed blonde who seemed put out when I told it wasn't a KG. Her response: "Well it sure LOOKS like one!"

I've had an individual with fewer teeth than fingers ask me if it was "one o' them Ferraris".

How 'bout y'all?

When we first trailered out Speedster home, we stopped at a roadside service center. Immediately, several young employees came out with camera's in hand, and asked if we minded if they could take some photo's of our "Ferrari" !! I said sure,, but its not a Ferrari. And they said,, with a puzzled look,, "but it is red !?!?!". Then they took lots of pic's anyway.

Similarly,, I was parked just outside the front doors of the local Walmart, a few weeks back. Every 2nd person who passed by would offer a nice comment, and I always do my best to give a good answer. One guy wanted to know if it was a 10 or a 12 cylinder motor !! I said no,, that they did not make horizontally opposed 10 or 12 cylinder engines back in '58. Sometimes it is best to keep your chuckles to yourself !!

I have no badges of any kind on my car. To any inquiry about the cars lineage I truthfully respond, "It's a 1971 VW Beetle".

That usually leaves most people with a really blank expression. They kind of know what a Beetle looked like, but this don't look like what they think it looked like?
I say its a 69 VW with a 59 replica speedster body. Its the truth and I get say 69 heh heh!

David K, at the last San Diego C&C I pulled up and parked one car away from your fine outlaw and next to what seemed to be a perfect 356B coupe. There were two bozos standing there and as I pulled up one said to the other " that's not real can you tell the difference?" (with what might have been a sneer)" I don't know if it was the P owner or just some yahoos, I did not say anything but if you can't tell the difference with fraken IM badging I don't know what.

I am glad I didn't engage but since they knew everything I ignored them.

I keep getting the nice Ghia line from the local hicks.

A bit annoying . When you consider I bought the cab from VS and built it myself. But I just say thanks.. And leave..

In the 7 years I have driven it now ..I have only had 2 people. outside of this club that knew (Exactly)!, what it was. Even spelled Drauzs correctly. That Knew What had to be done to Turn a speedster Into a D.

Know those are the Very interesting people.. I remember
Vince said, "I quickly tell them Porsche never made a wide body speedster.... ".

He's right. But an awful lot of flared speedsters were running around sports car tracks in the 50s and 60s. Probably running in some "modified" class. Slab sides were always in the "production" class.
