I'll save my jokes about that lever sending you to "Ludicrous Speed"......
Tom's right - moving that lever controls the amount of heat coming out of the heat outlets near the floor - those two silver, sliding doors by your feet. Don't expect a lot of heat, either. A tepid flow is about all we get.
Never seen one with a yellow knob before, but that's cool.
The so-called heat in these cars has often been disconnected or never hooked up to begin with.
To check if yours is working, start the engine with the lever all the way down. When you pull up on it, you should hear the sound of the engine coming through the heater vents. It will be quite noticeable. And you should feel some air coming out of the vent, too.
If you're very lucky, the air coming out of the vent will be a little warmer than the air already in the car.
If it's not working, let us know and you'll get lots of advice on how to fix it.
You have a 67/68 pan. That was the year VW switched from rotary knob to pull lever. In 69 the beginning of IRS a second lever was added for, wait for it, rear heat.
They all have it wrong and are trying to get you to pull the ....... ejector seat lever!
...also know to some as a Blind Date Ejection Seat Lever.....

Hey guys, everybody knows that those levers raise or lower the ride height of the car!
It can alter funny to the bone large volumes of hot air that tends to surface herein now and then :~) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
