OEM Ghias used a few different pads depending on whether calipers were ATE or Girling. Late models used single pin pads - either round or square pins (72-74). Earlier models used 2 pin calipers which is most likely what you have if its an aftermarket kit. Most aftermarket ones use Varga calipers which are the 2 pin pads. Take pads in when you get new ones. Squeal often goes away when you clean off brake dust, scuff up the rotor with sand paper and, as PO, said apply the anti-squeal compound on the backside.
Yup, 90% of the time if you just tell 'em "1971 VW Ghia" they'll fit.

Back in the days before "anti-squeal" RTV compounds came into vogue, the trick we used to stop pads from squealing (and shoes, too, for that matter) was to grind a chamfer at 45 degrees across the leading edge of the pad material. You could use a file, utility knife (if the pads weren't ceramic) or whatever would cut the edge. Once chamfered, they would not squeal.

Thanks for the many helpful replies! My theory is that the aluminum "Porsche drum skins" are not allowing enough ventilation under hard driving and causing the pads to overheat and squeal. I am a VW/Audi mechanic by trade and have seen LOTS of poor quality off brand pads, and I will be trying to source some good aftermarket performance pads (Mintex/PBR)and see if they are available.
I have been having a blast driving this car,we have a road here on Oahu called "Tantalus" or "Round top drive". Do a google Earth map search on it and you can see why I was using the brakes so often!!! This road makes you feel like you are in another world,it is narrow, windy, with breathtaking views, and the tree canopy/shadows are amazing when driving in a open top car!
Aloha fellow maniacs!
Porterfield AP30 pads are supposed to work with ghia 2-pin calipers. They're rear pads off a number of Alfa Romeo's. With the year/model Alfa from the first link, you can probably cross reference to other manufacturer's pads too.

I googled "71 Karmann Ghia brakes" and the pictures are nothing like what are on my Beck. From my VW/Audi expereience they appear to be very similar to 1970's VW Rabbit front disc brake pads.......the pads are more crescent shaped vs. the Ghia rectangular/square pad.
I will have to take them down to the parts store to cross-reference. Imagine a crescent shape with a 2 prong "fork" at each end,and each caliper has 2 long round slider bolts with a 7mm female allen in the end and a threaded stub on the other.
