Hi guys; this is my first post but I've been lurking around here and learning from you all for some time. I've been a VW nut for 25 years and have worked a bit on them. I'll be buying my first Speedster replica (probably used) come next semester. I've been checking around to see which exhaust system would look authentic and give out the right sound and performance as an original setup for a Super 90 engine. I've seen some pictures on 356's in which the mufflers protrude from the bumper brackets and I've also seen some with straight dual tailpipes (such as stock Type I engines) but larger. I've seen a muffler for VW's that looks remarkably close to the original Porsche dual tailpipe job. Would it work fine with a mildly modified 1776 dual carb engine? I recently bought the movie Doc Hollywood and I just love the rumble they got from the engine in the replica; definitely sounds like an old Porsche. I would love to get a sound like that. I appreciate your advice. Thanks to all!!

Check out the exhaust page from CSPs site:

The first exhaust system (flat 4) would probably look very nice on a speedster, but would be somewhat restrictive. The last few are very nice. These come with 1 1/2" tubing and can be used with larger heater boxes, should you need heat. The twin pipes look nice too.

Look at the file J-P for a pic of the CSP exhaust. Personally I like this one the most as it really takes on the look and sound. Please take note that you will have to add a couple of inches to clear the bumper, perfect thought if you want to add chrome tips. You can see in the pic where I had extra piping welded on. Center exits can be done with this configuration also but for me dual pipes are the way to go. There is also the A-1 muffler option that will work great too, it just won't have the correct placement of the muffler. Sorry for the dirty car, I still need to wash her.

Oh! I also forgot, check out Ola Miltorp's folder; he manufactured about 7 beautiful stainless steel 356 repro exhausts for VW engines. Sadly he's not building them anymore but he was kind enough to give me the specs and tell me how to make them, including a couple of sketches. Don't know if I'll try to tackle it though....
Here's the custom set up I had done for my Speedster by a local tuning center called HANSONS Muffler. It utilizes a 1-5/8" short flanged header to prevent it from exiting the rear. The muffler is a Magnaflow and has been tucked up into the bodywork for a completely hidden look. All tubing was Madrel-bent for a very clean look. Sound is very quiet and non-VWish
