Hi all,

Thanks again for the helpful replies in my other topics. I'm currently looking at a recent build (~2012) VS Speedster that has about 7000 miles.

What should I look out for when buying this car?

Here is my checklist:

1. Soft top test

2. Wiper test

3. Horn test

4. Headlights test

5. Brake light test

6. Clutch life?

7. Get a VW tech to do PPI check and test drive it

8. Ask about valve adjustment and oil change?

9. Check brakes (how?)

10. Check engine (how?)

If I may be completely honestly with you, I'm not very mechanically inclined with cars because I'm a computer guy.

My biggest problem now is that I can barely drive a manual car. My friend taught me few times in his Jetta. How should I approach this?

Hey Stan,

If you're doing a PPI, then you won't need to worry about checking the brakes, clutch, and the engine. The PPI should handle that. In fact, the PPI should handle checking out all of the mechanical stuff (items 2-10 on your list above).  If you're serious about buying this speedster then the PPI is a must do. Make sure the mechanic is comfortable with an air cooled Volkswagen.

If it's truly a one year old Vintage Speedster, chances are it's been well built and it shouldn't have any issues with panel gaps, but take a few laps around it. Check for chips and cracks. Ask the owner if he has any of the original paperwork from Vintage. Other than that, sit in it and make sure you fit. Make sure it's something you'll feel comfortable driving.

We'd love to see photos of it. Best of luck with your purchase.

Get as much documentation on the engine build as possible. Start with displacement.  Most recent VS seem to be 1915 cc's (a stock 69mm crank with 94 mm pistons/jugs).  A counter weighted crank or increased stroke add to build cost. Then look at carb(s) - dual are better for max performance. Cam info is good to have since replacing a cam requires complete engine disassembly. If there are multiple oil leaks from engine - it likley will need to be torn apart.  Leaks from valve covers are easily fixed. Also useful to know if trans mods were made - a 3.88 R&P conversion is desireable. Drive it hard for a good hour to ensure it doesn't over heat or break down.
