Just bench testing my new CIP1 wiper motor and see about 15 cycles in 30 seconds on low speed and about 20 cycles on high speed. I thought high speed would be a bit faster than that. Supplied voltage is 12.5v.

Can anyone try your wipers on high and low and give me a count please ?  I need to get this bugger installed soon and I hope it doesn't have to get returned for another. Thanks..

Even slower when dragging across a windscreen! Use Rain-X as a good backup (and windshield lubricant).

I always wanted to try a 914 wiper assembly.  It has much larger windshield so assume more powerful motor.  I had '72 914 and never had issue with keeping a clean windshield even in heavy rain.  I even added an intermittent switch.

Sorry David I am not near my car right now ..... Wolfgang, on both my IM's the speed was and is really not spectacular, I wonder if the 914 unit could be retrofitted to an IM?We all need better wipers ... Right now I use rainX and I even saw one guy use solid paste wax after he had cleaned his windshield extremely well to have the water run off.

On a really big downpour I have had to pull over as I was unable to see properly and drive safely.  It's one of the areas that is not pleasant with these cars.

I had this issue with both my 99 VS and my 71 Bug.  Local 356 club suggested I put a 6 Volt Windshield wiper motor  in place of my 12 volt one.  6 volt motor and 12 volt car.   Picked up the speed substantially.   Not much rain here in NM but now it's drivable in Winter snow or Spring Showers.  Year #2 of using it.  Be aware it's not the 18 speed model in wife's Volvo XC 90 wagon, but it gets the job done.  Jim

Thanks for the info, Lads. Let's kill this thread now.

Shiprock, eh ?

Jim...not sure if we communicated before but I think we may have. We slid from West to East just above you in our long trip in 2012. We tried to get up that million dollar highway at this time of year but too much snow. We did Mesa Verde Park though en route through Durango,  Pagosa Springs, Chromo, Chama etc. to see a buddy in El Prado just North of Taos. Jeez....I'm gonna make myself cry....that was four years ago.

Down thru Santa Fe, Alb., then East on 40 again, overnight in Tucumcari's Blue Swallow en route to Amarillo, etc. etc.

Sorry I missed you in 2012.   We could have linked up and had a fun time.  I was  Chief of the Eye Clinic at Shiprock Indian Hospital 1979 thru 1995 and then down the road a short walk at the Northern Navajo Medical Center 1995-2006. Fall 2006 I moved to Albuquerque, Post retirement from PHS-IHS.  You really ought to think about a return trip to sweep the Navajo Reservation.  Lots of 2 lane roads these cars were designed to drive on.  Not SLO or PCH views, nevertheless beautiful.  Flagstaff through Williams to Grand Canyon.  Then up to Tuba City via Cameron Trading post, Kayenta next and Monument Valley.  Blanding and Moab into Zion National Park.  Cortez to Mesa Verde, to Durango.   Ride the Steam engine Durango, to Ouray and Silverton,.  Drive through Telluride and cut back south through Pagosa Springs to Jicarilla Apache at Dulce, down to Jemez Springs and into Albuquerque.  Acoma, Sky City, Chaco canyon, pueblo at Zuni ,.  And of  course Santa Fe.  The Hermann Hotel (wife) has 2 houses with in 6 blocks of each other and 2 guest rooms up against Petroglyph National Park.   Local Zia 356 Porsche Club is having a drive out, first weekend in August to Chama to ride the Chama Steam Train.   We'd love for you to RON for a while and visit.  Jim, US Army 1966-1975, USPHS-Indian Health Service 1977-2006.  Class of 1968 and 1969 Nam.   Medic 18 D MOS.

I just love road trips because you just don't know who'll you meet. On that trip we spent a night in Albuquerque and had a beautiful night out with wine and excellent local cuisine.  Back to the hotel not too late.  I always park the car nose in right in front of our ground floor room.  Turn the wheels and lock the steering wheel to the shifter.

Next morning Francine is checking to see that we took all of our stuff out of the room and I'm outside with the deck lid up checking the oil and a really nice 33ish old looking lady walks along and says " hey...nice car"  Wow...medium high sandals, fairly short skirt and everything up top jacked up nicely and a very friendly look on her attractive face.  She said " would you like some company for a bit ?, I've gotta pay the rent . "  I said.."how much is the rent " and she said she pays $90 per night but I can cover that in 45 minutes or so.  At that point Francine was at the door behind her and calmly stated that all was out of the room and we should get going. Taking that cue, the hooker smiled at both of us, wished us a good trip and buggered off towards the traffic.

I admire a woman that gets up and gets to work on time. As we got onto the turnpike Francine was quickly writing something in her daily diary. I asked her what she was writing about and she said she's making notes about the wine we had last night. She sometimes wears a hat while we drive with the top down ....

I've not been quite that lucky or unlucky as the case might be to experience that.  I do get a lot of WTF is that, about the Speedster.  At the gas station a Lady of advanced age asked if I was somebody famous.   I suspect Francine will be keeping you on as short a leash as I am in the car.  Top down is a bit windy here, I get a lot of flack on that and Mary has an interesting hat collection.  Great way to enjoy your visit to ABQ, what a memory and not doubt a diary entry too.  Have an awesome weekend.

David:  I don't have a VW wiper in my car.  I used the yoke from a VW wiper to easily get the actuator rods positioned in the right places, but then use a wiper drive system for Hot rods from Specialty Power Windows in Texas.  It has a motor that I mounted over the passenger's knees tucked behind the dash, and the arms are driven by a spiral-cable.

Anyway, I just got the main power re-installed in my car yesterday (I had to re-route the main cables when I moved the battery ) and should be able to spray the glass with windex and get you some quick figures for lo/hi speeds sometime today and post them for you.

I know it's like Oranges and Grapefruit, but at least you'll have an alternative comparison.  gn

According to the timer in my phone (haven't worn a wristwatch in 15 years) I get;

Lo:  18 sweeps in 30 seconds

Hi:  29 sweeps in 30 seconds

BTW;  That's close (just a tad slower) to what I get in my Nissan Rogue, too.

I also found that my 18 year old wiper blades have about had it so I'll be visiting the NAPA guys tomorrow.     Should be interesting finding 9" wiper blades when you don't know what had them originally.  Guess I'll just have to wait for the "old guy" behind the counter.

That's actually one of the easy ones Gordon.  The wiper blades are usually just hanging up with dimensions on them.

Naw, Fraz....I'm about done with serious threads right now. Most every serious one I see anyone doing goes drifting sideways asap so i didn't see the point or any way to keep it all in one pile.

The transmission's in , the engine is in, the rear mount is in position. today.  Still have to fit the new rad ( same style and location...last one sprung a minor leak ) and hook some stuff up. Might have it running by Sunday.  I'll be at it all tomorrow morning and Sat and Sunday. Many things got changed...hope it all comes together.  I'll post an update somewhere with anything good to tell.

If you still want some real world numbers, here are mine. My 2013 VS has what looks like the VW wiper motor from the original 1969 donor chassis. It's old and crusty looking with a VW sticker.

These times are on the car with wipers attached and on dry glass.

Slow: 10 in 30 seconds

Fast (?): 14 in 30 seconds

Needless to say, I never drive in the rain. I'm guessing you 'need' the wipers to pass some state safety inspection?

PS: Of course, the VS wipers aren't controlled by a relay. As with headlights, a relay and decent gauge wire would probably improve performance.

Thanks very much for those numbers, Mitch...very helpful. No, I don't need those wipers for a state safety. It's for common sense and personal safety as I travel in the car frequently for long distances where the weather can be unpredictable and I have deadlines.
