3,000rpm at 60 mph is about perfect.

Remember, this is an AIR COOLED engine - the faster the engine turns, the more air flowing over it from the fan to cool it off. 3,000 rpm is a nice engine speed to start at. Use your gears to keep it there or higher. 2,500 is sort-of OK without a lot of load (just coasting along) but try not to drive around below 2,500 rpm. That's why you've got a gearshift.

Keep those revs up - Keep it cool.
Speedster owners gotta change their mindset when they fire up the air cooled ride. I've got a 3/4 ton truck that hauls 80 MPH at 2200 RPM. DON'T EXPECT SPEEDY TO DO THAT!
Carbs, air cooling, oil cooling, sometimes 60 year old technology requires 60 year old solutions. Just pretend you've been transported back to 1957. Take a backroad and enjoy the ride.
My car was pulling 3,800rpm at 66 mph (our speed limit in Western Australia) and on long runs combined with a Monza exhaust, it was too tiring.
Soooo I have ordered a rebuilt and strengthened transmission from Rancho with a 3.44 diff and am now on the hunt for a 2.1 type 1 to replace my mildly modded 1700cc type 1.Hopefully, this will have enough torque to cope with the odd small hill we have around here.
From all my reading on this site, this would seem to be a good combo for someone who prioritises cruising ability.
