What's everybody working on?

Well, here we are, just past the middle of Winter, and I bet all those Winter projects are in full swing to get us all ready for the upcoming Speedster season!

We've seen what Joe Soltice and Simon Hambley are working on, as they've been nice enough to post pictures and so forth, and we've seen Jim Ward's and Bill Steele's cars "in-process" up at Henry's and heard about Steve O'Brien's build at SAW, and I'm sure there are a few more cars in process at Beck, JPS and VS that should be ready soon.

How about the rest of you guys and gals?? What kind of Winter projects are we all working on?

I'm about half way through my "Great Fuchs Wheel Color Change" from Basic Black to a Polished look (Photo's below), and had a few extra minutes today to install a utility power plug up under the dash to run a G-Tech unit this coming weekend (Borrowed from someone in the local car club). Should be interesting to see what it tells us. I've also done some tweeking on my convertible top to make it fit a little better (It was kind-of thrown on just before my trip South so I finished it here) and am thinking of adding a little more sound-proofing just behind the back seat if I get around to it. That's about it from the "Southland".

How about the rest of you? Any good projects going on?

Hey Gord; great job! Now you're really cooking, those wheels make the car look great!!!

Ask JJ about his dash conversion; he had a set of modern VDO gauges in a configuration unlike the original. He removed the gauges, patched up the old holes, recut the dash for a set of new 356 repro gauges. He just had the dash painted last week and put it back together, including new upholstery. It's looking great and I told him he should do a post on this including pictures to help other forum members who come across the same predicament.

I'm working on getting brewski's for Knotts and think that big task is completed now. After screwing around for about 3 months I am about ready to mount the 3rd brake light, no biggy but I was undecided where to mount it. I pulled off the engine grill and quickly found that under the grill would be a considerable job to mount because the glass is mounded, not a good flat spot to mount the LED strip unless mounting some form of bracket. Think I'm going with the rear license plate bracket. Be pretty viaible there which is the main reason for mounting one in the first place.

lots of spinning wheels no slow progress, too cold to actually work on my car (and too busy).

collecting parts for:

body:
1. 4 lug rims with nipple hub caps
2. collected wide five drums/rims (indecisive4 or 5 lug, have both)
3. new convertible top
4. chrome windshield moulding
5. new windshield
6. rubber seals
7. new carpet
8. duplicate cmc gauge set to reconfigure gauge faces via computer
9. emblems, moulding, chrome etc..
engine:
1. turbo
2. compufire distributorless ignition system
3. currently mocking up fuel injection sys. using old webers and
chevy components (have to find time to go to the junky)
4.bn2 gas heater to replace the heater box's

in the mean time my car sits in my cold garage collecting dust, i work
on the above components in my spare time at work.

wow, look at that list, maybe my wife is right, i must have a.d.d.

The V8 Beetle truck, getting it ready for the Drag Racing Season. New side livery "EVIL INTENTIONS" done up with a faded patina to match it's years on the "circut." Maybe nose art like the WW II Bombers . . .

New heads, valves, double springs, seals, etc.. Just welded up the radiator support and tilt mechanism for the nose. Bought a built rear end to swap in when I want to bring it out on the highway. (4:11 Detroit Locker just doesn't cut it on Route 128).

Otherwise, still working on assembling the interior. Looking for the perfect mix of original and vintage. I see it on a LOT of your cars, and now I WANT IT TOO! Been trying to track down the carpet color that I see in so many of your pictures . . .

And shovelling!

My 'Honey-do' list has taken over my garage. I am refinishing mirror frames, painting bathroom doors and in general, saying, "Yes dear, that's a great idea!" and "Ooh, let's watch HGTV!"
My second priority has been staying out of jail, only time will tell on that one.
car related project of the month is scrubbing overspray off of my speedster. Seems I didn't cover it well enough when I was repainting those damn mirrors.

Me Too!! I even bought and detailed a second front beam to hang the five lug wheels on. Had the rear drilled for both lug patterns. I like the traditional nipple/crest caps, like having the disc front brakes, but LOVE look of the aluminum painted drums and wide fives . . .

What's ADD stand for, I can't seem to concentrate hard enough to remember . . .

Been working on my golf game. (indoors) Also been trying to hone my ice fishing skills. Will be heading to the Minnesota / Canadian border on Mar 3 for 4 days on the ice. Oh ya almost forgot... been driving the wifey crazy with all this talk about buying a Speedster. Oh well (they do get over it don't they?)

Fixed the clutch, going to take care of the horn which shorted when I took a real sharp right turn, touch up a couple rock chips.

I'm having problems finding book shelf display space for recent gifts:

New commercial VHS of Harper featuring a 356. The car has some pretty crude primer on the driver door and front fender. Hmmm, like those VW repos of Herbie that have been appearing at shows, someone with an unfinished speedster could do a Harper 356 look-a-like. Harper is not available in DVD.

If I can rid myself of this stinkin' flu/cold that's been hounding me for two weeks now, I'd like to:
Lengthen the leads for the new Optima Battery
New Valve cover gaskets.
Change tranny lube
Swap in new Pertronix II
I did get the new wiper arms on!
Wire in h/light relays
Install w/shield washer
Mount/wire fog lights.
Jeez, I gotta get busy!

This is what I need to be doing: applying my weatherstripping that I already have, at just the proper angle to allow moisture (rain) to run OUT instead of IN on my pants legs. This is on the front (hinge side) of both doors at the top where the door panel transitions from a sort of horizontal plane to a vertical plane down the side of the door. That's where most of the rain comes barreling in...then it makes it's way between the shrunken weatherstripping I now have and the door hinge post. It is such an easy job....I don't know why I am procratinating. One day I'm going to be caught in the rain and I'll be very sorry.

Very Cool Fred. I like the dam, and Fuchs... I've always loved the look.. Now there's a fun car and a great project!

My project? Dealing with Insurance, getting estimates, and losing sleep as contractors are cleaning up and drying out our master and the study... a hot water line in the slab cracked and soaked that end of the house. There's an Oak floor ruined, walls to be pulled (Mold is a big no no in post transplant, even in small amounts)a slab repair, pipes to be run in the attic... and fun fun fun getting it all right again.

Pics: my driver.. a reliable and heavy steel 54. RC Cola, I am always looking for RC stuff... cheap. I like the hunt.

Speaking of old coolers - I've got my mom's old GE frige. My parents bought it in the late 40s, I remember playing in the box. The only thing ever done to it was a door gasket replacement in 1978. Still keeps drinks cold and icecream frozen.
I've been busy working with some gentlemen from Nigeria on a business deal that will make me rich!!!
Seriously, I can't believe that scam is still around. Someone must be biting or they would switch bait.

On the Fiberfab, The body is just setting on the pan, So I'm gonna start from scratch and assemble it. The kit is pretty complete. The suspension and drive that's in it is unknown, from the donor car, so I'll re-do that stuff.
I planned to finish it to sell, We'll see how much $ I end up in it.
So far, I've gotten parts to build a 2 litre with dual 44 drla delortos type 1 motor.
I'm undecided about the tranny.
It has a tan top and tonneau, but dark wine red carpeting and interior.
I'm going to paint it that Ruby or Guards red. (If it doesn't clash with the interior).
But generally, I'm just going to put it together with the std. VW stuff we all use.
I still need to scare up some parts, like the windshield glass, and misc trim hdwre. Speedster emblems, Side molding, dash script, grab handle, inside rear view mirror, bumper brackets, and misc. hdwre.
