I'm redoing a CMC and have crashed into the phenomenon of Fuchs wheels on a cv joint system on a non wide body car......The car wore out the side walls on a set of 185-60-15s....This on the rear of the car.....As Porsche is the only auto maker using the 130 bolt circle, I don't have an alternate source of wheels.......

I've tried several custom shops and no one wants to tackle this job with a steel wheel replacement.....Available mags listed don't have the required back spacing.....

My question is, "If some one out there has the Cv joint tranny in a non wide body car, what are you using for rims and tire sizes in the rear end of the car????? Inquiring, and VERY frustrated, minds want to know......

Hope some one has solved this problem...And yes, I've ground the fender lip edge down to a 1/4 " width......

Am I lucky, or what????

Thanks for the RANT time and your efforts......

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.....

You mentioned steel wheels so only a suggestion for steel wheels ala 944 spare-tire wheels:

Select 1983 (or year) and scroll down to steel wheels and/or spare wheels.
Due diligence/research req'd of course. Helped my folks replace a wheel and some hub-caps and I personally ordered and picked up the merchandise; and it was like brand new (they deal with older model-year wheel replacement, of course). Quality way exceeded my expectations. Staff was great. Price/shipping may not be favorable to you, but worth a toll-free call. After you research the 944 spare wheel fitment, you can check your local wrecking yards/Craigslist (caution), Ebay, etc...

If the side walls are all ready worn out, then you need some new tires anyway. It sounds like some 175 series tires might be a fast solution?

I know, I know, those w-i-d-e tires look so sexy from the outside, but when you're driving, can you really tell the difference in cornering capacity? Especially with the selection of tread patterns and rubber compounds available today?

Think about it.
Leon,
I think my Speedster is the same era as the one you're doing.
Mine is a Classic or Fiberfab. It had both markings on it when I got it.

'70 IRS Pan with 2.5" dropped spindle disc brakes on front and std. drums on the rear.
The only things I did special was to spend lots of time Centering the body when I mated it to the pan. I used an air grinder w/router blade set-up to rout the wheel well flanges to minimum.
The rear tires "just" clear the sidewalls and have never touched...
The spring plates cleared. I think I had to change one spring plate bolt to face the other way to clear the rim. If I did any more clearance it was to grind the snubber stops on the pan for clearance.

I did cheat a little on the rear drums by machining the face of the inside face of the splined area (where it butts against the bearing on the stub axle). I think I took about 2mm (aprox .080)to move drums in a little bit. I figured everything was real close so I looked for every (Simple) way to give it some room.
I also had to grind the stub axles down a little (cut off wheel on a air grinder) to clear the Fuchs center caps.
Good Luck,
Greg

Cory narrowed his rear (front too) track when he converted from IRS to swing axle. I noticed that the rear torsion bars come in 21 3/4", 24 11/16" and 26 9/16." These are available from Sway-a-way. Believe '70 VW IRS came with 24 11/16 ones. Haven't seen article on doing it but assume you'd need shorter axle shafts too (or need to machine the ends shorter).

I have 914 2L Fuchs rims with 185/65x15" and driver's side is tight but should be ok. They are 5.5x15". Are yours 6" 911 Fuchs? Have you looked at taller (narrower) tires? 165/80x15 are old school but still available - even the 185/65 are little narrower than the 60 series ones.

Didn't Beck offer rear chrome steel wheels with the center repositioned for a different offset to address the problem?
