OK now that I have to change the exhaust system on the car I need to jack it up. Not being sure of the jack points I need some advice. Is there a single point under the rear or front of the car to place a floor jack that will lift either the front or rear off the floor. In the old days as a poor kid I just put the jack that came with the VW in the jack holes, jacked one side up put a jack stand under that side then did the other side. Cumbersome but it worked. This car is not so clear soooooooooooooooooooo. I guess the question also goes for where whould I put a scisor jack if I need to change a single tire. If anyone has a sketch with these points identified it would be great.

Boy am I learning lots about these litele babies and I have only owned it for a week.

Having a great time.

Thanks in advance for the help

Hi Troy,

I use the wheel ramps that are commonly available at various car supply outlets - Kragen and etc. I can back up or drive up the front. Gives me just enough room to scoot under and when I jack the front and put stands on the front support tubes the car is stable and level. They come in black or silver.

BTW I am in Davis, we should visit sometime.

Also, you might want to talk to me about having your car worked on in Sacramento at Bugformance.

Two good jacking points (at the rear) are under the tubes that are located just in front of the rear wheels. There is a sort of inverted 'V' part of the frame. The only bad part is once you use this point to jack up the car you have nowhere to put the jack stands. What I ended up doing is putting the jack under the shock tubes and then putting my jack stands under the above mentioned 'V's.

I jack up the back by putting the scissor jack using the floor just behind the door seam. This is a good area to jack up the car. Go as high as you can and throw the stand on the rear axle. The lower the jack and do the other side. This will be a good solid lift. I just finished the Karmann Ghia so spent alot of time under the car and I need to feel secure.
Mike, buddy, you better be secure! Be safe and we will down those suds that we didn't get to at Carlisle 2004. And yes, I would like an introduction to your inflatable mechanic, for purely technical reasons, you understand.

ps. I found a good set of ramps at Walmart in Lenoir City (say that in French three times....ha!) which raise the car up a bit higher than the ramps pictured. They have a neat set of "pre ramps" which compensate for the higher break over angle, and they fit right into holes which receive them. Pretty cool. I adjusted Algebra's valves several times using them.

I use a Nikon 3 million pixel camera and produce a 72 dpi image scaled for internet posting. You should see the beautiful prints I get at 300 dpi.

Oh ya - I'm a retired scientific and technical photographer currently in London to give a lecture to the British Photographic Society at the British Museum. Ta-da-whoopty doo doo-tally ho!!

If I can be of any help please contact me off-line. The real secrets are in PhotoShop. Got $600 dollars. If not I recommend PS Elements at $100.

Michael
