I found a Speedster I like but am now faced with the insurance issues. Despite Allststes claim a week ago they would insure it when push came to shove they said no because it is a kit car. Had I insured it as a 1969 VW they can deny any claim as the car was not what it was supposed to be. Progressive seems to have no problem but even limited use, liability only with a claimed value of $8k will run me as much as my daily driver 1995 Saturn.

Most collector companies seem to have even more strict rules and the car needs to be garaged for all of them.

Any experiences with non-specialty insurance companies that are kit car friendly?

I've had great experiences with Hagerty.
Pretty fast claim service, real fast with the checks... one busted windshield claim and one cracked fibreglas door frame, both were comprehensive claims... When I asked to boost the coverage with my new engine goodies, just a simple questionaire and some additional photos... Plus they send email alerts about legislative issues here in CA that effect collector cars etc...
I have all my vehicles insured with the same carrier. All or none helps if you are in that scenario. Probably helps to be an auld fahrt with a clean record. First I had State Farm and currently have AAA. In both cases the carrier took several pictures and I had to give them a "declared value". Mileage was restricted to 7500 per year, which is fine for a weekend vehicle. Cost was about same as my other vehicles, liability being about 50% of the cost anyway. Only strange part was after a lengthy discussion over "what" my vehicle was ('71 VW pan based) they decided it was a '71 Porsche speedster. Go figure? Finally, I have found that some agents know how to insure your speciality vehicles, others are not interested, all from the same carrier. Shop around for a good agent who digs cars and is not just after their commission!
I have state farm and it was easy. As David stated shop around to different agents. I got lucky and my agent ownes a vintage Healy and understands the nature of these cars. According to my agent they like this business as the driver tend to better risk and are not as likely to expose themselves to the hazards of daily driving with there baby.
I talked with my Progressive agent again today and misunderstood the policy. They quoted insurance based on a kit car which they are fine with but it gives you unlimited milage unlike Allstates "Specialty" insurance which has restrictions and they refused to do a kit car anyway.

At least with unlimited milage the numbers look alot better.

Best,
Tony
