I normally see the side-view mirrors mounted on the door or the fender. On the fender, it is usually mounted in line with the corner of the front hood (see red X marks)

I saw the attached picture online and I like how it is mounted on the fender, closer to the windshield. Anyone else mount their mirrors close to the windshield?

Here's where VS was placing mirrors back in 2013 if you ordered them on both sides. If you ordered driver's side only, they placed it on the door.

I think if you started moving it aft on the fender from this position, it would be blocked by the windshield frame until you got as far back as Robert's is mounted.

These mirrors are small, and were probably intended to be mounted close to the driver (on the door). The closer to your eye, the wider the field of view.

For some reason, VS didn't want to put the passenger side mirror on the door (so, for symmetry, they put both out on the fenders). Maybe they felt the passenger's side would be too hard to see when the side curtains were in place.

Keep in mind the Porshee factory mounted no exterior mirrors on Speedsters - they were a dealer-installed option, so ended up getting mounted wherever an individual dealer felt like.

A lot of us with these small mirrors mounted WAY out there on the fender have substituted wide-angle convex glass to give a more 'normal' field of view, although even with that, the one on the passenger side is of marginal utility at best.

(3) centerline of the Aero mirror base points where the car is going, not at a 45 degree down angle as on many replicas. Anyone know where/why that down-angle thing started?

The Aero mirror doesn't have a lot of adjustability without surgery on the base. If you point it downward, it gives a better rear view without the surgery. Mine don't point downward and a grinder was involved in the adjustments.

Mine are out on the fender and as you can see the mirror lines up with the window post. I feel as though my view behind me is fine with them there. I don't have any other references since I've never driven a Speedster with them anywhere else.

In my opinion, mirrors closer to the windshield look better than further on the fender near the hood. I think I will order it like this

do you have a passenger side mirror as well?

Here are pics of an older Vintage Speedster with the mirror placed on the fender, close to the windshield

i think this location looks best

further down by the hood looks more “outlaw” style

on the door is fine, but I’m afraid of someone bumping into it while walking by and ripping apart my door lol

fyi it is for sale at Vintage Motorcars now

Function over form???  Not in this case IMO.  Location on the doors to me is not only more elegant but allows the field of vision to be greater.

I would suggest you try it out first, but the mirrors are pretty small so you can and allowed to not like the arrow mirrors but if you adjust them using physics to eliminate the blind spot they are able to be used and prevent you from hitting someone on changing lanes.  I have them on the doors and I find they work well.

On the other hand I do have a roadster with taller windshield and side windows and while some have used a convex on the passenger side I haven't seen the need due to the adjustment of blind spot removal.

as previously discussed. blind spot removal

I actually agree with you, like the looks of them on the doors best.  My function over form statement basically meant that where ever the mirrors end up functioning the best, is where I am going to locate them, whether I like the looks of the location or not.

Lucky for me, it sounds like they function best when mounted on the doors.

Thanks for the links, they will be a great help!
