I ended up buying broken genuine 356 gauges on Ebay (the broken ones go cheaply) and putting 914 works inside of them. Essentially just replacing the 914 gauge face and needle with those from a 356. They went on like they were MEANT to. All of the scew holes and such lined up perfectly.

I also found an original red indicator tip blinker mechanism as well, but you can make a good copy based on an early Beetle or 67 and down VW Bus. Just make the three little "ribs" from fiberglass or Marine Tex, smooth and paint.

Carey, if only Jjr had known some time ago; he was dying to find a set of those but had to settle for the Chinese in the end. I can only imagine the Brazilian VDO's are very superior to the Chinese copies; are the fuel & temp indicators accurate? What about the diameter of the gauges as compared to the Chinese copies? One suggestion: I visited your website and didn't see that you offer parts for sale too; maybe you should add all the other support services you provide.
"How were you able to replace the face on the 914 tachometer since the diameter is larger than the 356? "

I used the 356 tach case, face, pointer and bezel with the 914 internals, It went together with ease. Of course the gauges are going into a '55 Coupe. Different dash layout than the Speedster.

I'm pretty sure that the Carrera tach is close to the size of the 914. I had one for a while, but couldn't use it because of the odd size.

If you want to use the standard 356 tach face in the larger 914 housing, you can use the inner trim band from a stock Beetle speedometer to take up the extra outside empty space. It'll look like it belongs, cause in a way . . . it kinda . . . does . . .

It REALLY does look "stock"!

The Brazilian VDO gauges are 105mm. They are the gauges that Kirk used when he had them copied in China, so yes, they are the same size. They are very accurate to the European gauges, and Palo can convert the KPH to MPH for those who don't like to do math while they drive.
I don't have time to sell parts, but often offer them to SO.com/SS.com members, that's why you won't find a list.
