Currently have a 74 1835 motor with dual dells--not sure if there is a cam or other goodies inside. Looking to finish sorting by end of May and be on the road. Since purchase I have not run this car. Has a 050 dist and stock coil. What I have read about this dist is that it works well with duals. Points are worn and I have not found replacements locally so I guess aircooled is 1 option OR--do I spend $$$$ to up grade--no spending $$$ is not  hobby? If I do--will there be significant gains? I'm just looking to cruise without issues--zoom zoom is not that important as is just easing in and out of country curves and spending the days enjoying the ride.

Thanks,

That's a very nice distributor.  Contact Glenn Ring, who is a member of this forum.  He rebuilds old 050 distributors and if he can't get you the point he can point you in the right direction.

I'm sure he'll post here soon.

Actually I don't rebuild the 050, it's the "009" of the Type 4 world and not suitable for a Type 1 based engine.

Depending on the cam and heads, I'd go with a 019 or 010 mechanical. The 019 is great when you have mild heads and cam. The 010 works best when the cam is more aggressive and you have heads that have larger valves and higher compression.

Back in the early 80s I ran a 019 on a 1776 with dual Dell 36s and a W-110 cam, 40x35 valves with single springs along with a extractor header and Bosch Blue coil... it ran great for 110,000 miles.

If interested, email me at glenn@glenn-ring.com and we can discuss your engine and what works best. I have both 010s and 019s in stock and plenty of tune up parts.

There's the option of finding parts for it (as Ron suggested), but a better option would be to use a mechanical/vacuum (svda) distributor. You'll get the same power through the rpms, but better mileage when putting around or cruising down the highway.

If you looked around you may find an original 034 used, or look at

The link you posted was to a Bosch Mexican 205zb which is identical to the old 034. Bosch stopped making them year ago. You're only option is to buy a copy made in China and I can tell you their quality is lacking. Also the original 034 was designed to work with the 34PICT-3 carb and is is NOT a performance distributors. I would only run on on a stock engine with a 34PICT-3.
