The CMC Kit I bought seems to have a bunch of gauges rather than a 3 gauge set I have seen on other cars.

What is a period correct gauge set, and where to buy. Will need an electric speedo for the 915 box. Classic Instruments looks nice.

Anyone know the speedo pulse count on the 915 box?

Thanks
Robert

The period correct (sort of) set is the 356 repro set as installed on Vintage Speedsters, JPS, Beck and Intermeccanica. At first they were Brazilian VDO repros; with time as in most consumer goods nowadays the most commonly (and sometimes the only ones) found are Chinese replicas of the VDO repros. My experience with the Chinese replicas hasn't been very good (especially with the tachometer). I ended up sending it to North Hollywood Speedometer to get it VDO'd (cost me $160.00 plus ship approximately). Maybe you could just buy a real refurbished VDO set from them (they set it up for whatever drivetrain you use so they can calibrate it to a VW drivetrain) and you'll come out ahead.
Or buy 911 gauges that match to the trans. For the Tach, a resistor can be inserted to chg the electrical impulse from 6 to 4 cyl. The 911 gauges will have black (most likely) bezel trim rings - these can be changed to chrome for period look. Faces will not be green - but they could be changed if desired. The 911 gauges will have combination large single gauge with fuel and oil temp read outs. You may want to add an oil pressure and a volt meter or amp gauge too - I'm sure VDO makes a matching one.
Dash is still blank, and I need to convert to RHD anyway.

I have not seen the gauges yet pending arrival in Thailand, but it sounds like it is not a 3 gauge set, and I am unsure of what CMC would have provided in 1991.

Here are the Classic Instruments guages

This is an easy, abiet not cheap, way to talk to the electronic speedo box, and get me kph. I am not too hung up on haveing an exact replica but would like some sembalance of period correctness.
Am I to understand that the stock gauge face is green?

I see on NH Speedo, there is a clock as well.

May sell the CMC gauge set if anyone is interested.

Rob,
Those are nice looking guages on the flared speedster. The replica guages are black face with greenish numbers, very similar to the originals. My old IM came with 914 guages in it and I replaced them with replicas from JPS (apprx $400 set of 3). They look pretty good although the Tach, though working, doesn't read correctly. After I did the switch I found out that I could have sent out my 914 guages and had them refaced to look like 356 guages which may have been better being that the 914 tach is slightly bigger than the replacement(had to modify hole for replica tach). Personally I have always been one of those guys who needs to be happy with the look of the inside of my car because that is where I spent most of my time when I'm with it. And other than cable lengths I'm pretty sure it won't matter if the guauges are for RH or RH drive cars.
Do a search here on CMC gauges. They provided "Vintage" gauges which were made somewhere in the far east. Mine had 5 that had silver bezel (NOT really chrome) with a white face. They also had gold/brass bezel and black bezel available. According to build sheet they listed for $325. They were NOT high quality - needles sat 1/2 way up gauge even in the box unconnected (did come to zero when power applied but popped back with no power). The speedo and Tach were 3 3/8" --- smaller 2 1/8" gauges were fuel/amp/oil pressure (bigger than normal VDO gauges!). I've seen them used on ebay with all senders for $100. They are NLA.
