Which type of jack would be suitable for my new Speedster? Of course I need something that would work with this type of car (I already know that regular OEM VW/Porsche types are not suitable due to the lack of reinforcement/jack spur in the replicas)and that fits in the trunk. Thanks for your suggestions!

Ricardo: I was thinking about this the other day. As I hurriedly got ready for our winery cruise last October, I stowed a small bottle jack for the run. Then I realized, D'oh!, that thing won't go under there!
I'm now keeping an eye out for a small scissors type jack that will slide under the beam or frame to lift it.

Bruce, I'm staying at a different hotel, about 2 miles down Harbor toward the 405. I will actually get in town on thursday evening. When do you mguess the "wash Off" will be at your hotel on Friday........I want to meet you guys anyway. I'll be there in time for the big clean-up, if you can give me an approximate time. Otherwise I'll just be hanging around the speedster area at Knotts all Saturday.

Jim, you don't know Jack and you're full of beams, and I'm not even going to mention your jack handle!
How come you guys go to the auto wreckers and get things like 944 jacks for $20, and I go the the wreckers here (in the land of taxes and rain) and they want a fortune for anything 'Porsche'. I'd go out and buy a used Miata jack, except I can't fit a spare in my trunk. Didn't someone mention that a newer Cadillac space saver spare has the same bolt pattern as a Porsche Fuch wheel? (small five)

I used to work with a guy really named Jack Daniels - he had a small fishing boat over in New Bedford named "Old #7".

The full size, rear wheel drive, Cadillac 16" wheel has the same bolt pattern as a Porsche 911 Fuchs wheel. The DeVille's are rear wheel drive and have 16" "Space-Saver" spares, and they fit right onto my 5-lug Porsche adapters (I'm using one now - see picture below).

HOWEVER! The mounting flange is much thinner on the space-saver, and you cannot use the Porsche lug nuts with the caps on them, so you'll have to get another set of un-capped (open hole) lug nuts to use on the spare (I'm pretty sure they're regular 14mm nuts). Make sure they're "coned" on the bottom to center the wheel (Bolt-centric!). Since the stud will be sticking out farther once the spare is on, you'll also have to carry a 19mm deep 6-point socket to run those open lug nuts on (It'll also work on the Fuchs lug nuts).

I made a junk yard run (Geez, Ron, You must have pretty crummy junk yards over in B.C........) and got the spare, the plastic spare cover, all mounting hardware, a scizzors jack from a Ford Windstar (partly 'cause it has a 19mm lug wrench attached) AND a bunch of 19mm lug nuts all for $20 (guess I got more stuff because none of it says "Porsche" on it!)

Ron O: Try driving your IM over to the yard and shmoozing them a little - maybe even give the guy a ride - always works wonders with me! Hell! I also got a pair of perfect Chrysler LeBaron bucket seats (same color as my interior) for $75. Too bad they're too wide, they woulda looked great!

Gary,

I am thinking the wet T shirt stuff will be in the morning, not too early. I'm going to check with the hotel about the hose and buckets. I'll shoot for 9 AM. Why not stop by Thursday evening. There should be some of us there, we can do dinner and whatever. There are several resturants near there, we'll probably be in one of them or in the parking lot! Look for the tubs!

Gary,

I'm probably the only person on the entire West Coast with no cell phone.

I've got several cell phone numbers already for some of the Knotts attendees so I can start a thread with those. I am thinking Dale Bates
should be around the area. I will publish some of the ones we have.

I figure my home phone in Oregon won't do anybody any good because my wife wouldn't know what you were talking about, LOL.

Whatever you get (Miata, Windstar, etc) make sure it comes with a handle which doubles as the lug nut removal tool AND is the same size as whatever lug nuts you're using (typically, 19mm, but yours could be different).

Whatever is on the top of the scissors (the part which makes contact with the car) is important, too, as you want something compatible with whatever you'll be using for a jacking point (I use the lower shock mounts, but you may choose another point). Those top pieces can be easily modified to whatever shape you want, so don't get hung up on it at first.

Another bonus is for the handle to stow in such a way that it positively "clicks" onto the jack assembly to prevent rattling while underway.

Lastly, if it comes with a carry-case of some sort, that's definitely cool.

Happy New Year!

Sissors jack works,Autoclub works even better. I don't have Autoclub (or a cell phone) so I'll stick with my Sissors jack. I got mine when I worked with gray market cars. It came out of a Maseratti.
I have a space saver tire on a VW wheel and the jack is small enouth to fit under the cover that hides the rim.
