CB Performance built my Speedster engine to my specs. I am a firm believer in an over square engine of what I consider small displacement. Pat Downs built my 94.5 x 78 with a secret cam and crank set-up. s.s. valves, 044 heads, light flywheel, 200mm Kennedy clutch just to name a few mods. I've been told that there is not a VW part in the mill. The engine dyneod at 145 HP before shipping. Carey at Special Editions was totally surprised at the results. Carey can tell you more about this engine and its performance. I'll let Pat do me another any time. Only drawback is that the valves have to be set every 2000 miles.
I was out at Jake Raby's shop about 2 yrs. ago, and he has more trick goodies laying around than you could imagine.....The nicest was set of billet cylinder heads for a type4 engine....Exhaust ports routed ala type 1.

I asked if he did type 1 repair work. He smiled, called in his chief wrench bender, and ask about the last type 1 build. The mechanic said he had to go to the spec. manuals, because he had forgotten a lot of the procedures. This was due to the fact that 95% of their work at that time was on type 4's.......However, he said he would be glad to help with any repair, or new engine...

He had removed and replaced a welded in front beam on a Spyder, that had some serious alignment issues.....

Nice shop. Clean and organized. Up on all the latest and greatest...
We do limited Type 1 turnkey work.

The main reason for this is due to parts quality related to the Type 1 engine today.

I have been doing more TI work in the past year since BugPack products looked my way for developmental resources while attempting to improve component quality and compatability.

We don't offer turn key engines based on price or quick turn arounds, but I will work with you to design an effective engine that will meet your desires for the vehicle.

Leon's statement isn't entirely accurate as his refernce question was related to the entire vehicle and what work we do with it. We haven't worked on cars in years and since 1999 have been an Aircooled engine development and "build" facility. The Spyder that he saw here belonged to a local Enthusiast that had been
"screwed" severely and I agreed to help him simply because no one else in the area understood his issues.

We do things at the next level and that means there is no clock in our shop, because time doesn't matter.

FWIW- My recommendation for Chicos work is no longer. Nothing ever stays the same.
I currently have a Chico Performance engine in my speedster and have been very very satisfied. I purchased it as a long block and fitted it with a DTM shroud from Jake. Chico was a great resource throughout the entire process. I'm disappointed to hear that Jake no longer admires his work. Jake's support was a factor in my decision to go with Chico. Why the change, Jake, if you don't mind me asking.
