Just finished the conversion to wide 5 bolt drums in the back and discs in the front. I used the "CB Performance" kit for the front. Awesome stuff, however, it is only available with a 2" drop spindle. Great for Bugs and Speedsters (with lots of room for tire clearance), not so great for us Spyder owners.
I used the 2" drop kit from CB to get some of my suspension back (car was too stiff in the front). I now have my front beam adjusters up to the maximum adjustment, have a great ride, but the front tires rub with a 3/4 full tank. Did the alignment and put in some more camber, no luck.
The problem is with wide 5 wheels. Most 4 1/2" 4-bolt wheels have excessive (4 3/4") back spacing which means the edge of the rim is as far outward as the face of the front discs. The problem is that no one makes an off-the-shelf wide five wheel with the same backspacing. All of the wide 5 wheels I found (including original 356 wheels) have a back spacing of about 3 1/2". This puts the front tire outward at about 1".
This means that a custom offset wheel has to be built. Usually by cutting out the center wheel welds and relocating the center to the desired offset...Bummer.
If anybody has a different solution please let me know. I ordered a pair of new rims from CIP today. There is a two week turnaround to have them re-dished by a specialty shop here in Bolton, Ontario.
What other wide-5 disc brake set ups have people used?
I posted some revised pictures of my Beck with the new brakes, rims and tires. Any advice would be appreciated since my car is not usable until my new re-dished rims are done.

Thanks all,

Heiko

Spent some time on the web yesterday (should have done that befor buying the cb kit). Found that most people with spyders are using the kit from So-Cal Imports ($499.00us). They still need to have the front wheels cut and re-welded, so I don't feel too bad.
I just sold my spare engine, which included the carbs that are currently on my spyder. Since I won't be using it for a month I might as well upgrade my engine tin and carbs.

Still looking for what everyone else is using for wide-5's disc kits.

In previous posts, I stated that I too switched from 4 to 5 bolt. I purchased new spindles, hubs/rotors and calipers from Greg at Vintage. I bolted everything up to my Beck and was able to use the 4 1/2 in rims on the front with no clearance problems.

The rear 5 1/2's had to be cut and re-welded due to Beck cars having long axles.

I was running 185/65 x 15 on the front and 205/60 x 15 on the rear
I purchased a complete kit from Greg at Vintage. The kit included new spindles, new front hubs/rotors/calipers.
In busted loosed the tie rod ends, ball joints and re-mounted the new spindles. My existing brake caliper hose was re-used with the new caliper.

For the rears, it was just a simple matter of removing the axle nut and caliper then installing a new hub/rotor and re-installing the nut and caliper.

Greg provided me with new 4 1/2" front rims and modified 5 1/2" rear rims. (the centers were cut and moved 1 inch to accompdate my long axles.)
Larry: Did your brake caliper bolt directly to the spindle or was there a adaptor bracket that bolted to the spindle first (then the caliper to the bracket)? What was the backspacing for your 4 1/2" wide-5 front wheels that Greg supplied? I could not find any wide-5's with the correct backspacing.
The rears had a separate bracket for the caliper, the front spindles had the bracket attached.

I'm sorry but I don't know the backspacing nor the welder that changed the rear offset.

Maybe if you post these questions on SpyderClub in Greg's forum, he'll answer the questions.
