Can anyone give me some insght into why they call Wide 5's - Wide 5's? I dont know anything about them, but do know they are coming on my car. Are they wider than normal with 5 lugs? Is it that simple?

Todd, here's a comparison of a wide 5 and a 4 lug wheel. Notice the wide opening in the center. It really refers to the wide space of the lugs, not the width of the wheel. If you do a google image search for 5 lug steel wheels, they will look similar to the 4 lug, both have much closer lug spacing compared to the wide 5's.

percect...thanks!!!
Make sure you purchase a wheel balance adapter to have for balancing. Most tire shops don't have one so you will need to supply.

TDR--with wide 5s you really must carry an adaptor in your car at all times. When I got my Speedster with wide 5s I could not fine a single tire shop that had a machine or an adaptor that could mount those wheels.
A place to get a Wheel Balance adaptor ring (as they are termed) is
Manley Custom by design
218 Cranberry Meadow Road
Berwick ME. 03901
You can order online at www.manleycustomby design.com and the adaptor rings are $69.95 (when I bought mine in '07).
Also, you might be interested in the Manley oil dipstick with temprature gauge which is 49.95. It looks like a meat thermometer but much sturdier and gives an accurate reading for oil temp.
--Hope this helps.
If you are getting your car in time, why not caravan with Nolan who is coming from Ft Lauderdale --we are meeting up with John Hallstrand in Knoxville for the trip to Carlisle. Check the events section dor more. You will love it!
just phone around and ask if they can balance a vw rim/tire (1948-1967 year)
walmart has em. lots of places do. i personally wouldn't buy my own adapter.
and ask that they put the stick on weights on the inside. that way they won't scratch the crap out of the lip and you won't have that funny big-ass-wheel-weight-look.
Is that them?
I would think the old 4 bolt to wide 5 would work just fine for an adaptor. or make one.or buy one.I dont see needeing one in the car unless your going on a long trip with road hazzards or dead tires.but stuff happens,I had a firestone let go of the steelcasing a few months ago, the tire still lookd like new. what a mess it made.
Does that dipstick really work? I like that idea a ton. With my oil cooler and fan, would be nice to know if they are working!
TDR---they seem to wotrk fine. I used one for 12,000 miles and liked knowing for sure, what my oil temps were. You won't be disappointed.

Is Nolan actually driving all that way or does he trailer his car?
He trailered it the first year, but has driven it since, I believe.
Hell yes, TDR...Nolan drives on his own four wheels because he can. I went further than that last year. I left Ottawa, Canada, headed South but missed Carlisle and kept looking for it till I hit the Atlantic Ocean. Went right past Jacksonville too. Found out I was in Key West and someone set me straight. I caught Carlisle on the way back up North just in the nick of time for the show. :-)
What David forgot to mention was that he did all this in a car that he bought for a song, drove a longer distance in the year before, and then swapped the engine for a home-built subi conversion. David is THE MAN!!!
You are too much, Lane but thanks. The trip you mentioned was a little more relaxing that the one the year before from Boise, Idaho to Ottawa with a 1600 cc vw pisspot. Big O Tires in Provo, Utah has those wheel adapters too. Ask me how I know. Was I nervous on that trip ? ....sure, especially when the gearshift lever turned sideways on me two miles into the trip.
TDR---bite your tongue! "Does Nolan Trailer". NO!-- He drives that sucker!
2 years ago at Carlisle I saw a plaque on the dash of one of the cars that said "If you see this car on a trailer, call the police because it's been stolen"!
I am kidding a lot here because I do understand those who do trailer and am just happy that they do whatever works for them to attend the events. But to me,and Lane, Hoss, Nolan and many, many others others, half the fun is driving the car and I have spent a lot of work and $$$ making mine a great road car.
We have one great member (musbjim) who has put something like 60,000 miles on his Speedster (a VS), --- I believe is our long distance record-holder.
As far as I know there have been only 4-5 cars that have driven from East to the West Coast---one twice, I believe, so these cars need not be garage queens.
--Hope to see you in Carlisle!

It's the one from mainelycustombydesign; the one TUB4STU indicated; I bought one in '08; great stuff; it's worth it.
