I've shoped CP1 and Sierra Madre Collections to narrow down the 5-1/2x15 inch wide 5 wheels with metal finish (not chrome) that I will use on my car.  However, I've noticed that the finish on the wheels that are available are a clear-coated dark grey (seeing them in person at SMC.  On many speedsters that I have seen the wheels appeared to be a lighter silver colored.  Any idea what is period correct if trying to recreate a Carrera.  The lighter silver or the darker grey color ?

My understanding is that the inventory on these wheels is very limited.  The two choices are the Chinese versions sold by CP1 or the Brazilan versions sold by SMC at about twice the price (these are the ones that Kirk says that he has been using).

Any comments of thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks, Grant

GTMan,

I own the tooling for the wheels sold by Kirk and by SMC, and I supply them both (I don't supply CCW and don't know who they deal with).  It is the former Mangels tools modified to have a more authentic window shape and we changed the offset of the 4.5" wheel to better fit the spyder (the 5.5" offsets stayed the same).

There is no problem getting the wheels and we have 1000's (literally) in stock.

The lateral and radial run out is MUCH better than any Chinese wheel I have seen/used/thrown away.  The only thing I plan to change is that they copied the Rudge part number system and it is on the lip of the wheel, just as the Rudges were.  Most people don't notice it until it is pointed out, and even then they don't care, but I do plan to move it on the next run.  The powdercoat IS a touch darker than some of the original 356A wheels I've seen, but it is a dead match to the 912 steelies I have here, so I am more than happy with them.  To be honest I am just so very happy I don't have to deal with China-crap wheels anymore...

Joey, those do look great. They are one of my favorite things about your car. I'm wondering how a similar set would look on my silver speedster. Right now I am running chrome wide 5's with moons. I'm thinking drum skins, silver wheels, drop the thing about 1 to 2 inches, slap on the driving lights and maybe invest in a Lietz rack for the back. All I need is time and money.

What tires are you running?

See you in the spring.

That is great Carey! You're doing the same thing with the gauges; very valuable contribution in keeping the quality up on parts for these cars.
