I need to get the cracked CBs off the Hoopty so I can feel a bit safer about it. I have a plan.
A year or so ago I helped a guy out with his engine, and he's going to return the favor by giving me his cast-off rear brake parts this week. This dude's got the old Wide-5 drums he took off his Beetle (he went with the Chevy pattern discs as an upgrade) and I want to know what, if any, increase in track I'm going to find when I change mine over.
Anybody ever go 'backwards' like this? I'd think the drums would be narrower, if anything. I'd hate to find out that they're too wide for the body.
Thoughts?

The CB wide five disc kit I tried several years ago increased the rear track 1/2" per side (1" total) so I'd venture to say you loose a total of 1" in the rear track. If you are looking for an EXACT measurement, then keep in mind that there are slight variations in the wide five drums. Not 100% up on my old VW part numbers, but I have found that the wide five's that are smooth in the center are 3mm more narrow (each) than the wide five's with the "castle" in the middle.
Hope this helps.
"I'll be using the type that need the castle nut."

OK, let me clarify. They all use the castle nut, BUT the earlier ones have a smooth center (center being the part you'd see through the open center of the stock wide five wheels) and some have 5 raised "spokes" in the center. I always referred to these as the castle center, not to be confused with a castle nut... The ones with the raised "spokes" in the center are wider than the ones with a smooth center.
