Windscreen tension rod query

Hi guys,
I bought an original speedster w/s tension rod to replace the makeshift one I have that consists of a chrome rod with a flattened curved attachment that hooks over the top of the w/s frame.
My question is: How do I fit the rod to the frame? It has a little
"S" shaped bend at the tip. does this go into an adapter that I need to buy and fit to the w/s? Or do I merely drill a small hole and fit the rod directly to the frame?
