In order to solve my windshield wiper situation, I decided to install a complete new '66-'77 wiper assembly. They have the splined pivots which should solve the overall problem. Cip1 sent me the assembly and also the left and right arms for '73-'77. Oddly, the arms were two different lengths and have no female splines to match the wiper assembly pivots.

Cip1 and I have not figured out the lack of splines in the arms yet but I've concluded that since the Speedster windshield is a way different size than the VW, we just use two stock right side VW arms to make things work. Have I got that right ? If so, can anyone recommend a source other than Cip1 for these splined arms ? Thanks..

You are right on two pass side arms. I switched mine to silver arms and could only find them on eBay. I also switched to stainless wipers for a more correct appearance and found the shortest ones I could get that fit the arms at Sierra Madre. The description said they were going to be a little long but when I put them on they fit great and have about a half inch clearance at the top of the windscreen. The blades were high priced but Sierra Madre was cheaper than Pelican or Stoddard. You also have to put a bend in the flat steel part of the arm so it arches up. If you go slow you won't break the powder coating.

You could also get the black arms at and bosh blades at Cip1 or Socal... Typically more readily available and cheaper. (And standard instal in new build VS cars) , buy a can of "VHT SP188 Ford Argent Silver Wheel Paint Can - 11 oz". at Autozone, remove the rubber blades from the Bosch metal body and put on a couple of coats.   for under 7$ You get the same color as the VW/ porsche silver blades.  Because it's wheel paint, it harder... Does not chip easily, and high heat resistant, plus it has a nice matte finish...

I have yet to find a set of arms that actually come with the female spline to fit the existing male spline on the wiper assembly. Exhaustive research on the net only led speculation about what Greg is suggesting....tighten the nut down and it will create the female spline on the arm.

Fpcopo....could you please say if those arms you bought on ebay did have female spines built into them?

Luis, could you please say a part number at Cip1 that have the splines on the arms ? I bought pn VWC-111-955-408H ...wiper arm , right, black , beetle, 73-77 and it has a hole but no spline in the hole. The correct wiper assy I bought was for 67-77 beetle.  The problem here is not so much the colour of the arms but WHERE DO YOU GET THEM WITH SPLINES ? Did your arms that you refer to have splines, Luis? Thanks.

This is the part I have. It does have splines----- but because it was installed by VS and not me I can't say if the splines are there because the material is soft, and when it was pushed in the splines were made.

I have removed the wipers several times, and have always been careful not to damage the wiper arm splines... just in case! They are a tight fit.

On a side note--- even in Seattle I have only used the wipers a handfull of times  when caught in surprise rainstorms. It's very hard to see and the wipers, like in my '59 Austin and '62 356 coupe, don't work all that great in heavy rain at highway speeds! Just good enough to allow you to find a place to park/through the car cover over the car, order a cup of coffee, and wait the storm out.   For light rain on side roads they are OK.

At Socal Imports---. YOU MAY WANT TO GIVE THEM A call. They are supper friendly, and the owner has been building/owns these type of Speedster cars for decades. He knows what the different builders tend to use, as he supplies some parts to most of them.

Bingo, Luis...you just hit the nail on the head. Thanks for that excellent info to confirm the right approach.

My wiper arm is the same number as yours.  Hard to believe you have to "grind in your own splines" to make this stuff work. Live and learn.

To hopefully end  this thread on a useful note, it has been discovered  that some Stock VW wiper assembly pivot shafts have " male" splines and one would expect that the corresponding, receiving , wiper arms may have "female" splines to accommodate a nice engagement. Not so..... at least always.

It seems that the "female"  end of things has no spline and is just tapered enough and soft enough to sink into the male counterpart under pressure of the fixing nut exerting pressure thru an adequate sized washer. Instant female spline.

YYMV. Others have come to no such conclusion.

David,

There were no splines.  The shafts dug into the soft metal on the arm and made their own grooves. I had to buy the wiper nuts and 10" blades in silver from Sierra Madre. I couldn't find them any where else. The arms are both right hand side Beetle from eBay.  I think 67 year has right female hole and the correct hook for the blades. The do fit perfectly after you put a little bend in the arm just past the folded sheet metal portion of the arm. I matched the bend that VS put in the old arms.
